But I found the work at A2 was significantly harder, hence our teachers predicting that we'd probably get a grade lower unless were we very good at the subject or did particularly bad in AS

Doesn't surprise me at all though, as the previous poster said, it seems like a bit of a lottery!!
You're right there. Seems a bit of a farce at my school, just how much you can twist a teacher's arm. I have a biology teacher who has had students in his form coming to him saying Mrs X has refused to give me Y predicted grade in Z subject, and he'll just go in and change it, even subjects he knows nothing about.

I can only assume because it was hoped/expected that students would improve from one year to the next?

Most responsible teachers base their predicted grades on what had already been achieved, rather than a hoped for improvement!

Maybe I'm talking out my !!!! then! Haha, that's just what happened for me, but then my grades were pretty shoddy so they knew I had plenty of room for improvement (actually sitting the exams was an improvement for History!)

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply, we have shown our son all your replies and he has certainly calmed down alot. I know that his swimming is going really well at the moment and is due to go to Luxembourg to swim at the end of January, he has been chosen for a programme fast tracking swimmers for London 2012 and has just been asked to attend a review day by tall and talented with a view to progressing him for rio 2016. My hubbie and I assume that he is putting a lot of pressure on himself, to be the best at everything were as we have always told him to do his best, if say in a race that means he comes last he comes last, but he will have done his best at that moment.

I have told him to speak to his year head on return to school but for the moment just to continue with his studies and training. So off to the pool now, only allowed 2 days off!!!!

I'm sure that it happens - there are many teachers around these days with very few scruples.
