I think the explanation lies in the fact that a cleaner would be used say for maybe 2-3 hours max a week, but a childminder could be upwards of 40 hours per week if for a full time mum who travels a bit each way.
Then you can add on the multiples, as in my wifes case, she can mind up to six children at a time, sometimes she can be on upwards of £20 per hour.
It can be stressful, but we are lucky in that all the children my wife minds have been long standing 'contracts' and they really are like part of the family. At least two of her charges scream the place down when Mum comes to collect them!
As I say, it's worth considering, certainly does not suit everyone, but allows us to have expensive holidays (you need them after childminding upto 60 hours a week - lol), and has enabled us to get some big jobs around the house done. A benefit is it also helps social stimulation with your own child, especially if they are an only child/first born.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I employ a cleaner through Selclene (a nationwide franchise), and there are some advantages to using this route. I pay the cleaner directly - £20 for 3 hours (well, 2.5 often, as it is not a huge job but I pay £20 whatever). I also pay a retainer to Selclene quarterly. The advantages to me of doing that is that Selclene hold insurance so if the cleaner breaks anything - and it has happened(!) - I can claim on Selclene's insurance. Also if the cleaner leaves or takes a holiday Selclene can send me someone else straightaway to take over or cover for the holiday.
The advantage to the cleaner is the insurance cover - they don't have to worry if they break something - and a good supply of work from vetted clients. Also I pay them holiday pay - 1 week for every 13 weeks worked. This is all part of the contract.
Just an idea if there is a Selclene franchise in your area - might be worth checking out?
Good on yer and good luck with whatever you decide to do.:T
