id love snow tyres but everywhere i rang up this morning has none in my size...one company even had the cheek to argue about the size i wanted and said i needed a different size, and refused to check the size i asked for!!!! im sure i can read numbers in the sides of my own tyres!!!
how do snow socks work?? ive seen them but they look like a canvas bag!

Out of interest, what size were you looking for? You can go a bit narrower or a bit wider on the same wheels and still be fine, and it's better to have narrower tyres in the snow.

I'm going to look for some cheap steel wheels in the summer I think, and get some snow tyres on them, then just swap them over in the winter. Apparently our winters are due to get worse, due to global warming.

Snow chains are overkill in the UK, we simply do not have enough snow.

A an off road driving course would be more beneficial for most drivers from what I have witnessed in the past week.

Even just watching the last series of ice road truckers would help a lot of people :)

I managed ok when my GF wanted to go out to Brecon and take night-time photos of the snow. Got stuck a few times, but nothing that couldn't be sorted out with some careful manouvering or failing that, dumping a mixture of isopropanol, salt and water down onto the ice that was under the snow.

Loving the video with the smooth music and little girl to encourage you to think if she can do it as quick as that I can do it. But all the cuts in the video tell a very different story.

Ah, they were partially correct. With snow, you want narrower tyres than normally fitted.

they can be a nightmare to put on especially with cold hands!!!

I m sure they are ;) try how it feels being left 10 hour on a motorway or somewhere elese unable to get AA help or move, then you would appreciatte cold hands for few mins.

We leave ourselve soo dependend on aa/rac , that some people dont even know how to change a tyre let alone anything else.
There is no AA where i come from, but i am amazed when i borrow my brothers car, his car boot, got everything you need , in case you get stuck.. unlike my car which only got a spanner ;)

Can I ask why narrower tyres are better in snow? Would have thought more rubber = more grip, unless the smaller tyre contact area means the car pushes down more to the road...

I've always got spanners, a socket set, screwdrivers, bottles of water/screeenwash/antifreeze/oil, a spider, tow rope, torches and various spare odds and sods. Doesn't take too long to amass a half-decent pile of kit that will go unused for ages, but will prove its worth in an emergency. Of course it's also handy if you know how to use the kit too :)

Smaller contact area, more pressure. Which cuts better, a thin sharp blade, or a blunt fat blade?
