  • They're illegal to use in this country. The weather we get isn't bad enough to warrant them. You'd do better fitting a set of mud and snow tyres.

Snow chains are not illegal in the U.K- you just cannot damage the road surface which limits the use of them to very few situations. There isn't enough bad weather bar a couple of months if you live up farm tracks on mountains or work at ski resorts!

  • Snow chains aren't illegal but this time of year thyere are so may wrong posts on other forums that it's understandable that people think they are.

I have some as I drive to the mountains in Europe every year and it's a requirment in most countries.

They work really well but we rarelt have enough snow to justufy them in this country, snow/winter tyres are much better for here.

They're good, I've used them in the UK, but you have to take them off when you get to the gritted roads or they eat the tyres.
So with all main roads gritted, and no side roads, it's not really worth it.
Or if you are the only car that can move, and everyone else is sideways across the road in front of you, again not much use.
They are good if it's just you in a blizzard though, somewhere on the derbyshire moors.

Fair enough. I knew it was illegal to damage the roads with them and assumed they were outlawed as a result for public roads.
  • Only use chains on snow, once you reach a cleared area you must take them off. Also watch the maximum speed limit of 40mph when driving with chains (fitted to traction tyres but you knew that).
  • id love snow tyres but everywhere i rang up this morning has none in my size...one company even had the cheek to argue about the size i wanted and said i needed a different size, and refused to check the size i asked for!!!! im sure i can read numbers in the sides of my own tyres!!!
how do snow socks work?? ive seen them but they look like a canvas bag!
