Those aren't rechargeable.

AA Li-ion rechargeables do exist but I suspect will never be a mainstream product as they output 3.6v and cannot be used in most AA devices.

I think the lack of suitable chargers would be one concern, there's a chance that people would try to use Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh chargers then the potential for an explosion is a major problem.

Many reasons: Overheating; not as robust; potential fire hazard if misused (far more than other recharge chemical types) - especially with the incorrect charger; difficultly in voltage and output - the Li-Ion chemistry only lends itself to 3.6V output...

This is why Li-Ions for cameras always come with a dedicated charger too, rather than a one-size fits all charger.

Rechargeable lithium batteries are either Li-ion or LiFePo4 chemistries which work at 3.6v or 3.0v respectively. This is higher voltage than normal AA's which operate at 1.5v. Single use lithium batteries which work at 1.5v are a different chemistry and as far as I know, there is no rechargeable option yet.

You can get rechargeable li-ion batteries in the AA size. They are called 14500 batteries - see here http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3435 (note these are 3.7v batteries).

They are used in certain high powered torches. If you used them in electronics designed for AA's you will probably cause damage.

Li-ion batteries can be quite dangerous - you don't want to be near if one of them explodes. Batteries with protection circuits (like the one I linked to above) are designed to prevent explosions due to over charging or short circuiting.

No "probably" about it! You will certainly cause irreparable damage running an electronic device designed for 1.5V AAs on the aforementioned cells, blowing the circuits and render the device useless; in addition invalidating your warranty!
• I could really do with Li-Ion rechargeable for my flash gun.. even my 2800mAh rechargeable don't last long

However.. these bad boys lasted for ages (Panasonic EVOiA) - http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=104772

Maybe it's the charger at fault. Delta V chargers do a much better job.

The other problem with standard NiMh is that they self discharge depressingly quickly although there are some which claim to be much better in that respect.

^ Absolutely agree.

Have a set of 2700mAh which last for an entire shoot in a pro flash gun, I've posted about it in detail before ringo, do a search...

Can you not tell us which make these 2700mAh are?

Perhaps a standard Li size should be developed so that different products dont need their own specific Li-ion batteries.
