how to get best price on new car

icon1.gif
I;'m getting a new astra and trading in a megane coupe cabriolet. I've been in touch with a few brokers (none of which got back to me with a car!) but Oldham Vauxhall have phoned with a car, and I've been to my local branch. They know I'm playing each other off, and both are reluctant to give me a 'final price' and are playing 'the waiting game' whilst accusing the other of playing it. It's quite funny - however, i'd like my car before the VAT goes up! i can pay the balance in full - is this the best way to finance it? I've told them I want to finance it the cheapest way possible for me - but you never know if they'll tell you the truth! They've said if I pay it in full I can get the best price. Maybe the only way to tell is to agree the price and then backtrack and ask for finance! Can anyone tell me? Also, how can I get the best deal? Am i going about it the right way. I remember buying cars in the past and the salesmen were like the plague - but I've had to constantly phone both dealers to ask for info and tey;ve not got back to me!!

You could save yourself a lot, lot of money by buying a recently preregisterd car. Buy a new car and you lose around £2k just for driving it away.
We bought a pre reg Corsa, hadnt ever been sold, Registered in May with on 18, yes, 18 miles on the clock, we bought it in October and it was 9.2K as opposed to new at just short of £12k - just mentioning it as its a lot of money to lose within minutes.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Agree with the above advise.

My car was sat next to an identical car on a Vauxhall forecourt in Sheffield. Mine was an ex-demonstrater, six months old with less than 2k on the clock. Price-wise, it was as near as dammit £3k cheaper.

Buy a pre-reg with cash, and haggle to get the best price to change, Xmas time is usually a good time to get a deal.

If you really need to be the first owner on the paperwork, printout a price list from a web broker, dealdrivers, drivethedeal, and work from there.

    Hmm.

Im not so sure. For kick off, buying a pre-reg will most likely mean it will be registered 2009, so automatically your car will be treated as if its 'one year older' come resale time.

How much discount would you have got on the new car though? Often this can amount to several thousand anyway, and often there are preferential finance deals / free insurance / etc on new cars that dont apply to pre-reg cars.

On a Corsa- quite probable that you could get perhaps get a few £K off new as they seem desperate to sell, but £3K might be pushing it on the higher specs.

I saved over £6K on my car which was pre-reg but had a bit of a higher milage (demo/fleet car).

To be honest there may be deals on new cars, but rare to match the pre-reg.
  • Be careful with the pre registered is always cheaper advise. It didnt work out that way when I bought my Ford Fiesta Titanium last month!!

I got a very very good deal on a brand new fiesta titanium 5door, with metallic paint and Bluetooth Voice control.

I got the car for £11,800 brand new. Pre reg ones were coming in at round abouts the same price, maybe just slightly higher!!!!

I suppose it depends on what car it is?

I suppose the point i was trying to make was that if you had taken your new car off the forecourt, driven it round the block as the nw owner and then asked them how much they would give you for it then they would probably have said around £9k -

You have to learn to haggle and haggle hard.

pre reg every time for me from ow on.

    +1

I got a brand new Passat Bluemotion for literally a few £'s more than a pre-reg one AND mine will be registered 2010, not 2009 which means its worth more come resale time.

PLUS, you can generally get better finance deals on new cars.

I think it would be wrong to assume the best deals can only be had on preregistered cars, particularly at this time of the year when those pre-reg cars will be 09.

I guess its worth having an open mind when buying any new / nearly car and looking at what the best deal is for you - whether that be new or nearly new its worth checking what deals are out there.

    +1 to that.

If you do your research before you enter the dealership, know exactly what realistic discount you could haggle that's the key thing. Check prices online at sites like DriveTheDeal, ask around on forums specific to the model car you're looking at to get a feel for what discounts others have managed to haggle recently. Play a very tight haggling game, don't be afraid to sit there for a while....and play the silence game - when things go quiet, don't be the first to break the silence :D
