hi there my partner is due to have our 1st kid in jan and is now on maternity allowance, didn't get smp due to the dates she started work. i've just started as a mature apprentcie getting about 150 a week. would we be entitled to any help with rent and council tax?

private landlord, we can prob just about get by if we could get a council house but like everywhere else they are in short supply. i'll have a look at entitled to; last time i was on i couldn't see anything about apprentice for employment. seems they are in a bit of a grey area. classed as full time or part time? as i spend time at college but it's the exact same hours, rules and expectations as being on site.0

Contact your local council tax section as there is a form for apprentices to get an exemption - so 25% off the bill, I don't know the amount you have to earn weekly but worth a try.“You’re only here for a short visit.

Regardless of any help with the CT and rent, you should be entitled to Working Tax Credit as well as getting Child Tax Credit. CTC is ~£2500 a year OTTOMH so with child benefit, that's roughly £70 a week there alone. On top of that, you should get working tax credit as well. I think it'll work out better than it looks like it will at the moment.0 -
On those wages you're likely to qualify for a significant portion of your rent and ct paid - perhaps a bit less when the baby is born and tax credits kick in.

thanks for all the replies folks. really helpful.
the savings are in emergency cash fund and in current acc. between us both. i need the cash readily available now. hopefully using the savings will pay off better in the long term once i'm qualified. hopefully the conservation/building sector will be in better shape by that time. i'll get her to complete the forms and get them in asap.
i thought ctc was 20 per week? 2500 pa? thanks again.

Child benefit is £20 per week.
This calculator will tell you how much you might expect to get in tax credits. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/payments-entitlement/entitlement/question-how-much.htm0
