High Voltage Supply Equipment

Hi

I am after some advice please.

I am currently buying a house which has an adjoining field - the survey has come back saying "there is high voltage supply equipment in adjoining field. The possibel effects of electromagnetic have been the subject of media attention and public perception may adversely effect marketability"

(There is a pylon in this field) I have done some research on the net - nothing in concerete etc but would anybody else on here be able to offer anymore advice.

Thank you for any advice/comments given.

  • The survey is just saying that it may be harder to sell the house again with the pylon in the field. While there is little scientific evidence to suggest that it will be a health problem, it probably looks a bit ugly.

    Cheers

    James.

I have just found out that it is under 200 metres away, which is also worrying as reading some articles on the internet it increases the likelihood of a child getting lukemia by 70% :-( plus other factors

Am not to worried about the sight of it anymore more the health risks!

This has never been proven and there is no known mechanism by which low frequency electromagnetic fields can cause cancer. However there's a lot of articles on the internet that claim it has, mostly by eco / green types who would have us all living as vegetarians in mud huts.

Personally I'd be more worried about it spoiling the view...

There was one of these leukaemia clusters discovered near a power line in Sheffield I think it was - saw this on the box 20? years ago. On further investigation, it was discovered that the line in question had been de-energised for years.

Conclude what you will, it seems to me that there are other aspects of modern civilisation [or perhaps modern civilisation itself] which may responsible. If you start from the premise that powerlines cause leukaemia, then look for clusters, you may find what you are looking for, but it might be hard to prove the connection beyond the fact that you used the connection to find the problem. Certainly, leukaemia clusters by definition can only occur where people live and power lines also naturally congregate near populations

In other words, if you felt that bus depots could cause leukaemia because of cleaning out the filthy buses, you could probably find some serious clusters near bus depots. But if you turn it around the other way, finding the leukaemia clusters and looked for the causes you might find it hard to prove that it was powerlines more than bus depots or more than any of a dozen possible causes.

Similarly, if yougoogle on "powerlines luekaemia clusters", you are going to find a lot of material which suggests strongly that there is a real problem. But if you just google on "luekaemia clusters" you might get a much broader perspective. Of course, if you are googling from the powerlines perspective, this is only natural given the way you came to the issue.

I think your real problem boils down not to powerlines but due to perception of powerlines. It is not fear itself, just fear of fear.

Determine for sure it is a pylon and not some other equipment.

High Voltage can mean anything from about 400v to many kV.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)
  • i dont like the way they buzz... its unnerving.... i wouldnt buy a property with a pylon that close...

I can't sleep near them, although I am not consciously aware of any noise/sensation ... But become chronically insomniac!

I agree, the noise of buzzing can be horrendous, particularly when it is raining. There is also the possibility that the electricity company may need/choose to upgrade the line in the future and put much bigger pylons there carrying even higher voltage. They can also affect TV/tadio signals etc causing interference.

  • Thank you for all your replies.

It is def a pylon. I am going to see if I can find out the voltage.
  • Does anybody know how I can find out the voltage!?
