Ok here goes, and sorry to rant!
Early November went to my local Harveys and ordered and paid for 2 new sofas with guaranteed christmas delivery, recieved a phone call this morning to be told they won't be delivered until the week commencing the 5th January due to the weather - where do we stand?

I had the same problems last year but with DFS, I ordered in September, they guaranteed christmas delivery, didn't fufil it, sod all of an apology from them, I got angry and told them to shove it and went to SCS
Did you pay anything for delivery? I would certainly demand back any delivery costs and speak to the manager and ask if they are willing to do anything else out of courtesy?2010 resolutions1- get my 5yo DD dry daytime, with enuresis help dry since 12th Jan so far!

I'd suggest checking the contract with Harveys to see if it has a section for "circumstances outwith our control" or similar, if it does and it covers weather, legally there is probably very little that you can do.
If there is no such section, I'd suggest contacting the branch manager and asking him what he is going to be doing to uphold his end of the bargain and if you get no joy as for head office's number.
I'd also suggest that you stay calm when speaking to them as you might get further - if you go in with all guns blazing they are unlikely to do much to help you. A lot of retail managers work on the basis that rude/aggressive customers will go to the bottom of the to-do list!Dogs have owners...my cat has slaves...0 -
If you dont like it cancel the order.
To be fair though it seems a reasonable excuse as deliveries must be at best hampered if not completely stopped by this weather.
Harveys need to consider the risk to staff and I cant see it being at all safe in many parts to deliver sofas in this condition.0 -
Without sofas I guess you can stand anywhere...Sorry couldn't resist
You could try negotiate a discount if it has caused you significant problems but I would bet in the terms and conditions that you have signed it states that delivery times are not guaranteed and indeed a quick browse on their website gives
" 5. Delivery dates
All delivery dates quoted at the time of your order are estimates. Whilst we make every effort to ensure that we honour estimated delivery dates, it is possible that circumstances beyond our control may cause delivery dates to be changed.""The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

Hi,
i ordered my 3 + 2 seater suites on the 14th October 2009.
it was due to land in my new house on the 9th December, then postponed till the 14th december, then 16th, then 18th and then i was re-assured it would be saturday morning... nothing, rang them up and they said not sure who told you saturday but it will be tomorrow (sunday) 20th december between 8am - 11am... sitting there anxious and got a phone call at 11am to let me know that the delivery is stuck in bad weather and wont be there and they will call me to re-arrange.
i have ran every few hours today and yesterday (remaining very calm - and have been praised by several staff for this) but people dont seem to know where it is?
ive had people saying to me, you've come through to the non delivered items section and yours has been delivered.. im flabbergasted!
spoke with a guy yesterday who was going to ring the warehouse and let me know, while on hold, phone went down.
rang back around 6pm and someone just picked phone up and straight back down!
spoke with another lady after that and she would get back to me this morning, nothing!
a lady at 9am was supposed to ring me back from warehouse to let me know but she hasnt...
i rang at 12:30 ish and spoke with another lady who said she will speak with warehouse and let me know.
its all just a joke to be honest... £69 delivery as well!!!0 -

Brilliant. :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Harveys are a right bunch of pirates, my girlfriend paid £800 for some bedroom furniture, all the bottoms of the draws fell out, the runners for the draws fell off and one of the draws on the wardrobe just pops out by itself randomly! They refused to accept it was any kind of fault, (so they're designed to fall apart ey?) but said if we wanted we could send the items off for testing?! A massive wardrobe and two chests of drawers, yeah good one!0

Well nothing is ever guaranteed in life.
The delivery vehicle could be involved in an accident en-route or the driver could drop dead. The weather seems a reasonable excuse.
However if you are polite and charming you might be able to get something.
Is there anything you want? Foot stool? vouchers?
Whenever I complain about this sort of things I always write a nice letter along the lines of "I was disspointed that your service did not reach the normal high levels on this isolated occassion".
I grit my teeth sometimes but the idea is to give them the possibility of a posistive outcome and the chance to win over a customer who is largely positive.
If you go in all guns blazing then on both a personal and business level they have little to gain by helping you and they are not motivated.
You could cancel but that depends on whether you want that particular furniture and probably have to wait longer if you start again.0 -

a couch would be nice - lol
i havent had a couch since i moved into my house : (
i have asked to cancel but i am not eligible to cancel as their policies state you may only cancel within the first 24 hours.
i tried going to the shop on saturday and sunday but the shop is closed until boxing day.
the other quote from Customer Services i liked was : "you have to understand that some peoples tables and chairs wont be arriving for their christmas dinner"
woah, thanks, i wont have a couch to sit on!0
