best contract mobile for student?

My daughter is at uni, where her mobile phone disappeared during last term, and she needs a new one. She'd prefer a contract phone as she says the cost of calls is better..... she doesn't want to be tied to times of day to call or text, neither does she want the cheap calls to be limited to one network. Can anyone help us through the minefield please? She doesn't need anything fancy (video for example) but wants a serviceable handset and a reasonable tarrif.... say £20 a month, or possibly £25.

yeah the three network is realy cheap but their customer service is crap.... for 15 quid per month you can get 500mins anynetwork anytime plus 100 text message although the offer is by redemption.. so if you dont have a problem with the phone then it's wonderful if you do then it's a nightmare getting it dealtwith

Forward Cellular are the acknowledged leaders when it comes to bargain contract mobiles.   She could there get 100 anytime minutes on a Nokia 3100 for a net cost of £40 for the whole year.

It's also worth a look at Carphone Warehouse's site if you want anything a bit fancier.

All these offers will involve cashback, this looks a bit iffy when you first hear about it but it now seems to be the way much of the online industry markets things, and relies on people forgetting to send in their bill on time to claim the money back.  FC are particularly reassuring in that they rebate you after the first bill, wheras some sellers make you wait as long as a year to get the money back.  The worrying factor here is that the seller might go out of business before refunding you.
