Hi, this is one of the best spec (i.e. 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo) just now for low end ££ @ £379.00

    http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-3689.aspx

Its Vista so you have to get the Windows 7 upgrade disk from Toshiba if you want it - about £27 so a bit of a rip off from Toshiba there(!)

For a 17" this isnt bad - next range of processor down:

Your old Sony sint that bad a spec. You could up the memory to 1Gb and get a faster hard drive and then reload Windows - it would run pretty well. Would only cost about £65 for the bits.

    that doesn't seem too bad:
    "Toshiba L500-11V Laptop (Intel Core™2 Duo T6500, 3GB, 250GB, 15.6" Screen, Vista Home Premium)" @ £379 + upgrade window 7 so £400 all in.
i don't want the next processor down, think the intel core 2 duo scores quite well.

    i'll also consider used option

wouldn't mind an older macbook white but prices seem too high for the better spec laptop

i don't mind returns aslong with some warranty
will check them out later (as work internet i can't access those sites)

from the above looks like tesco is cheapest for intel core 2 duo

Keep an eye on dell (main site), they've had a few offers of late and last month I picked up a brand new 15" 2.0Ghz 3 GB ram 250GB HDD, large 6 cell battery machine with Win7 already installed for £355 delivered... no doubt they'll have a few offers on in the post xmas sale season

it looked pretty smart too not like that Tesco one (sry, personal opinion but that looks like a cheap plasticy case :p)

Actually I think that it's the Dells that look cheap and plasticky. Put the Dell next to the Toshiba and you will see what I mean.

I think they made a mistake selling them in Dixons and the like, because now you can see how cheap the construction.

Friend of mine has the DELL 1525 and can only open the disc drive by going in to My Computer. Others have keys falling off. No Dells for me. Sorry.

Toshiba come with six cell batteries as standard. Unlike Dell who get you to pay for an 'upgrade'.

Did you get a webcam included and what is a "2 GHz"? HDMI output? Gigabit Ethernet?

This is half decent for £349, Windows 7, Free delivery and Case. http://www.dabs.com/products/samsung-r519-celeron-dual-core-2gb-250gb-dvdrw-windows-7-h-69FN.html?q=samsung%20r519 Before anyone starts about the Celeron, it is a Newer Celeron Dual Core Processor whch out performs some of the older Core2duo's and Pentium Dual Cores that are going around in the £300 -£400 range. The Dell 1545 offers are not that good at the moment, apart from the Pentium Dual core at £379 and Core2duo T6600 at £399.
