looking to replace with something which will last in performance, condition etc.
budget low as possible, but don't want the low spec ones
looking for to do:
- photo editing like elements
- handle all my dslr pics
- internet
- office
any suggestions. would love a macbook pro but no budget
what about dell outlet? specs and jargon are way over my head as bit out of touch

Hi, this is one of the best spec (i.e. 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo) just now for low end ££ @ £379.00

Its Vista so you have to get the Windows 7 upgrade disk from Toshiba if you want it - about £27 so a bit of a rip off from Toshiba there(!)
For a 17" this isnt bad - next range of processor down:

Your old Sony sint that bad a spec. You could up the memory to 1Gb and get a faster hard drive and then reload Windows - it would run pretty well. Would only cost about £65 for the bits.0 -
I've just been to PC World (I know...I know...), they have an Advent at £299 http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1004418152.1261432113@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfgadejeemejelcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=450415&category_oid= it shows at £329 online but it was £299 in store.
It's only 13.3in screen but other than that it looks OK to me. It's not dual core but I'm not sure that's entirely necessary for static photo's - I use dual core for video editing. The cheapest dual core at PC world was £379 I think....Piglet

I have run Adobe PhotoShop CS4 on a Toshiba Satellite L300-2CW, so consider that your starting point for a good quality machine. £294.
Specs here Go to page and then hit F5.
Others to consider; Samsung R519 £313 Samsung R519 v2 £328
Toshiba Satellite L350-235 with 17" screen for £354. Specs here.
Windows 7 upgrades are available.
Just to give you an idea of what you can get for the price. Don't worry about them being Argos Returns. They are mostly in new condition.0 -
Re-install windows, your current laptop is fine for your requirements, it's probably slow because of all the extra stuff loading at startup (ram upgrade might help if you are using latest version of elements), or possibly infections.!!

Please...no Advent and PC World recommendations here. Otherwise you will be responsible for any fallout.
Anyway, that's really just cheap and nasty. 0 -

Ahhh yes, the magic word being cheap!
I bought a HP/Compaq model instead for a bit more....(Personally I'd have gone for a refurb'd model but I was shopping for someone else)Piglet

thanks all
will have a look at the options above.
i did think about maybe upgrading some components etc. but it seems to run very hot underneath and battery doesn't keep its charge, so by the time i buy a new hardrive, windows 7 upgrade, ram, battery etc. i'm sure the above options might work out cheaper in the long run0
