Please help - awful skin at the moment!

  • I've had the same problem since I was about 27, so almost ten years now :( It got so bad I saw a dermatologist and took some very nasty tablets which cleared it but as soon as I came off them they came back. I saw a homeopathy practitioner which helped, but I've used so much stuff now, I can only say that different things work for different people.
I've got a Zeno which helps no end, I've got some scars (don't pick them!), and I've stopped using most of the harsh chemicals apart from when I'm desperate. If you ask a pharmacist for their recommendation they will suggest some good creams for topical application.
I don't get them on my chin as much any more, they appear below my jawline now, which is even worse. I think I used Duac unsuccessfully!
  • My skin has always been prone to spots but at the moment it's so bad and making me feel like crap. I've tried so much stuff it's untrue. I've tried Benzamycin gel, Benzoyl peroxide, Zinert, Isotrexin gel, Eythromycin, Tetrasyl, Oxytetracycline and Dianette. I've also tried washing my face with a plain soap, aqueous cream, Dr. Lowe, Tea tree, Clearasil, Clean and Clear, Clinique, Clarins. Everyday just seems to bring a new spot :( I'm so fed up of nothing working.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.
  • I've had acne for over 10 years, have tried every non-prescription remedy there is plus oxytetracycline tablets, benzyl-whatever gel and a coouple of other things I can't remember ;) I'm currently using an alcohol-based topical antibiotic in combination with DHC pure soap and oil-based cleanser, and body shop vitamin-E cream. It's working okay at the moment but I'll often find soemthing works a few months and then it comes back with a vengeance. Make sure you're eating a good diet with plenty of fresh veg and fruit, and essential fatty acids - starflower or evening primrose oil is good, too. And don't use any sugar-based soaps stuff on your face (unless it's honey which is anti-bacterial) as it can feed the bacteria. I've had some nasty results from using LUSH face masks, possibly for that reason.

I've just been recommended a homeopath by a friend who used to have very dodgy skin and doesn't any more. I've never tried any alternative medicine before, but if I go for it I will let you know how I get on...

  • I'm 27 too and just fot the same problem started a couple of months back I'm now on the pill though this did make prob worse I popped into lush the other week and asked for desperate help they recommended their face mask 'cosmetic warrior' and asked me how much water i was drinking which was minimal. After using it for about 2 weeks - not daily my skin is loads better these last few days i've really tried to up my water intake too as i was barely drinking a glass a day, i;m not a fan of wearing loads of make up i'm pretty much straight out the door person so am glad they've finally died down think it was £4 something for a small pot but i'd highly reccommend it

  • So I've been using Duac, which I was prescribed by the doctor's for 6 days now and my skin is in appalling condition. The side effects were dry flaky skin but my skin is just such a mess - red blotches, itching and horrendously dry which no moisturiser is helping. I'm going to stop using it as I would rather have spots which I can cover up with really good concealer (Bo-oing by Benefit) than this. It's so bad today that I have to cover my face with my hair anytime I speak to somebody.

Hi, I'm 27 and never really had problems with my skin until about 3 months ago where I started getting spots and now getting them about every other day. They're particularly bad on my chin and because I'm naughty and pick them, they've left red scars. I've tried everything I can think of - started with Dermalogica after I had a facial there but that's not working so am now back to Liz Earle. I have started a course of microdermabrasion but that's really just for the scars.
I've read that spots on the chin can be hormone related so I've started taking Evening Primrose Oil tablets to try and regulate that.(although the spots can also be on my cheek)
I've not changed my diet recently or been significantly stressed.
This is really getting me down, my face looks awful without make-up on and I just can't think what's causing it so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Just thought I would mention that I had a horrendous outbreak at the age of 32 that lasted months, the gp tried loads of meds before refering me to the local hospital dermatology clinic who tried more and nothing worked. Then a couple of months later I started to get kidney stone trouble and the renal unit told me to drink 2 litres of water a day and avoid certain foods - and hey presto my acne cleared up too! If your meds don't help and it's not stress related then I would definately increase your fluids especially as in winter we all turn the heating up and dehydrate more - it might flush some toxins out of your body and help to clear up your skin - good luck!
  • my daughter (who is only 11 and has acne) has been using the duac for about 6 weeks and tbh it hasn't made a jot of difference.
Going back to the drs, but dr did say she has to try lotions first, then tablets.
Personally I would prefer her to be referred to a dermatologist as she is so young, and GP's don't always have a lot of experience in dermatology.
I fear she will now always have the scars.
