my daughter (who is only 11 and has acne) has been using the duac for about 6 weeks and tbh it hasn't made a jot of difference.
Going back to the drs, but dr did say she has to try lotions first, then tablets.
Personally I would prefer her to be referred to a dermatologist as she is so young, and GP's don't always have a lot of experience in dermatology.
I fear she will now always have the scars.

I think you sound like a lovely Mum. My mum was really unsuportive about my acne. She called me a tart for wearing make up to school when she caught me with foundation on to cover the acne up:confused: and now she claims she can't remember my skin ever being bad!
I wish I had had some help sooner, mine started at about 12 years old. My skin is scarred, I have red areas that will never fade and some pitting. I hope you are able to help your daughter x

I do sympathise - I'm 32 and have really bad acne during my teen years and was on lots of medication that never really had a dramatic effect.

My skin is better but every now and again I get a spot of my chin that stays there for ages (just got rid of one before Christmas that I had since early Nov) partly down to the fact that I'm very naughty and pick - just can't help myself.

I asked to go on Dianette pill in the run up to my wedding a couple of years ago - they won't put you on it for long as it's not recommended for long term use. I can honestly say it did not work for me - I didn't notice any difference to my skin. However I did start a proper cleanse, tone, moisturise routine and had regular facials. I never had miracle skin but at least no spots for the wedding photos!!

These days I tend to use Brevoxyl which is a cream you can get at the chemist counter which is used for mild to moderate acne. It does have a drying effect around the skin so always moisturise that area well after application has settled in. Also Dr Nick Lowe Spot gel is good - both available from boots.

She may be lucky and not scar. One of the reasons my acne is really bothering me now at 31 isn't that it's suddenly got worse (though it has!) but because my skin's older now and has started losing the ability to heal properly without scarring. At her age she might be OK.

It may also be worth trying to see another doctor at your practice for a second opinion - when I first sought help with my acne at 15 I was put straight on an antibiotic treatment.

As for the dermatologist, I still haven't had that referral

  • I'm 43 and had to come off the pill 10 months ago for various reasons, but my acne's come back! I don't have clear skin at all :( For the past couple of months, I've been trying various skin-care products to find the one that works for me. Not only so I can find someone thing for my skin and stop buying loads of stuff that doesn't work, but also get a brand that I can use regularly and work it into my monthly budget.
The one I'm using at the moment and am happy with is L'Oreal's Pure Zone. Anyone else like it? I was worried that it may be too harsh for my skin, but I've been using it for a week now and so far so good. :j
The other products I tried were Murad Blemish Free (good, but pricey), Dr Nick Lowe (disappointing, I was expecting more from this range), Body Shop, Freederm. I hope L'Oreal works as it's a good name, had lots of positive reviews and good price! I've just tried their new eye cream and that's lovely too (and cheaper than the Clinique one I've been using).

I used to suffer from acne really badly until I started using the oil cleansing method. Cleared my skin up beautifully and no chemical nasties. I follow by using Elizabeth Arden moisturiser and find my skin in great condition.

I did swap to Lush's ultrabland for a while and my skin flared up so badly. OCM was definetly the way to go for me.
