OK...modern cars won't let you put it into anything that'll damage it although it can still be forced. When stopped on a hill waiting to move off as per a hill start, leave it in Drive. 1-4 are for when you want control over it, such as changing down to descend a steep hill although again, modern autos are good at this.

In short, stick it in D to go forward, R to go back and when you've parked, P. Use N if you're going to be stood for a while, i.e waiting for a level crossing.

What's D3 for? and why is it a button and not like the other gears?

I feel alot better from these helpful clear posts. Am I correct in thinking that it is impossible to stall a car with automatic transmission?

It must be because I've never done it :rotfl:

Weirdest thing for me going to automatic was stopping on a hill ... no fumbling about with gears, handbrake & bite points. Just take your foot off the accelerator and come to a halt ... such a weird sensation, just "hanging there" ... LOL

Hope you have great fun in your new car :-)

it will feel really weird that there is no biting point. I can see myself going for the clutch, hitting the brake with both feet and launched through the windscreen at 40mph :rotfl:

True, as there is no numpty with their foot in control of the clutch. Left foot is now redundant.

You can use you left foot to change channels on the radio to keep it out of trouble.;)

I hope I will too, although I will miss the time of late night motorway street races dropping the gear from 4th into 3rd at 50 to get that extra torque and raging noise from the engine at the expense of needing a new gearbox every 6months :rotfl:

I'll bet that's what the D3 button is for :rotfl:

I find the clutch peddle is high in my manual car so when driving the automatic I often forget no clutch, lift my left foot to change down the gears when braking and find it waggling around in mid air.:o
