Great thread - really cheered up my Friday morning. There's something for everyone in here, it works beautifully on many levels!
Just to add my pov, if you don't have enough IDE channels then Scan do a lovely (cheap) little USB 'Easy IDE' connector which is only £10.
I don't know how many USB devices you can fit on a 'HUB Farm' but with plenty of these you might be able to install your Emergency Medical Hologram program (not sure it would run though, you might need some more RAM)
On the subject of power suplpies, I run 5x250GB and a DVD writer using a 350W power supply without any problems (its quality not watts that counts). The Scan easy IDE ha sits own power supply if you're worried..
