Nobody can expect you to wear 2 different coloured rings on one finger!

I'd just say thank you for the gesture, but my engagement ring is platinum (or whatever it is) and I'll need a silver coloured metal wedding band as 2 different colours won't look right.

It's not being mean, it's being realistic, 2 different coloured metals will look so odd!

hmm, i've just found this which seems to suggest its perfectly possible to plate yellow gold with rhodium, but that it will need re-plating frequently, so if i did go down that route i'd have to not have it for a while at a time while its re-done... not so sure now!

do you know what though actually, i was so worried about telling him i didnt want the ring in case i seemed like an ungrateful cow, i was expecting a barrage of people telling me how rude i am to not like the family heirloom i've been given! thank you for all being so nice and understanding what my problem is, you have all reassured me that its going to be ok to speak to him about it whatever i end up doing!

Can't he have your ring melted down into a pendant or something, for you to wear on the day, and then buy you a white gold band to wear with your ring? He can wear the original ring if he wants to.

Could you use the heirloom rings for the actual ceremony but purchase a white gold ring to match your engagement ring to wear after?

It does look odd to wear two colours of gold together and hopefully H2B would understand this. His family rings would be used for the most meaningful part of the ceremony and you would still have them for future wear if needbe. :)
  • It is a lovely sentiment, BUT, you're the one who has to wear the ring for the rest of your life! I think you need to tell him. You're the one who'll see it on your finger every day.

Personally, I like yellow gold (and it doesn't look chavvy on me :p). But that's just it; it's all about personal taste.

OHs mum had a family engagement ring she offered him. It just wasn't to my taste and I told him so, and he was fine with that. Also, I felt that my ring should be mine; just mine. I didn't want it to have been used in a previous marriage, even a long and happy one. Just my feeling.

Also agree completely that two colours of gold together would look very odd. I have a yellow gold engagement ring and when we look for wedding rings (I do want a plain yellow gold band) will want to match the shade of gold as closely as I can.

    No it's not

The yellow gold is bleached with white metals before being plated ;)
