in a bit of a wedding ring pickle!!

my h2b has been handed down two gold bands from his great great grandparents that he wants to use as our wedding rings, which is a lovely thing, but in all honesty i really dont like them, and i feel horrible for it! they are just plain bands, which actually fit us both perfectly. the thing is, i just do not suit yellow gold at all and dont wear it, all my existing jewellery is either silver or white gold - including my engagement ring!

it obviously means a lot to him that i have this ring as he has mentioned it so many times, and i just dont know what to do!
do i not say anything and be stuck wearing a yellow gold ring that i dont like and doesnt suit me, alongside my white gold engagement ring for the rest of my life, or do i offend him by telling him i dont want to wear this ring and would rather have another one? or is there another option i havent thought of here? everytime we discuss the wedding budget, he says "at least we dont have to worry about the rings, as we already have both of ours!"

    congratulations on your wedding!

you're going to have to tell him.....this is something you're going to wear for years and maybe pass on to your kids???? so it has to be something you want and will love and treasure, I don't think he'll be unreasonable about it - maybe suggest that you get the gold melted down and made into something else you would wear???

Do the rings not have signs of wear been that old? I'd maybe use that and say you don't think they're gonna last the next 40 odd years!!!

Just tell him, personally I cant stand gold on white skin it looks (to me) quite chavvy and more suited to asian or black skin.

Hence why we have chosen platinum for the engagement ring and wedding bands.

they definitely arent shiny and new, thats for sure!! they arent battered though, or dented/bent out of shape, like most rings that are so old would be, so they were clearly fantastic quality when they were made.

i just had another thought though, isnt white gold just yellow gold that is rhodium plated? i wonder if we could just have mine plated or something? its only the gold colour that is putting me off wearing it really, i'd not really want to have a fancy fashionable wedding ring and would just have something plain if i was choosing.

    Hi,

I think you're right about white gold being plated and it's definitely something to pursue.

Whereabouts in the country are you - do you have a jewellers nearby that does that kind of thing?

i think we only have your bog standard chain jewellers, samuels, ernest and the like. would be worth travelling a bit of a way for if it saves the upset though! i'm in hampshire, between portsmouth and southampton.

    Hi,

It's probably a bit too far to trek, but we have a "Jewellery Workshop" here in Maidstone.

I hope it's okay to post this - their number is 01622 758445 if you wanted to ring and see if it's something that can be done.

    Their website is here:

Mmn would help if I read their site first - they definitely do it!

you can also "merged" two golds together i.e yellow and white gold...I've seen a ring made with both and the colour and effect was lovely!

    Apparently it's not.

Yellow gold is made by mixing pure gold with alloy metals such as copper and zinc.

White gold is an alloy of gold and some white metals such as silver and palladium.

I think you can have yellow gold coated though- it may need to be done every few years.
  • Can't you get them melted down and made into two rings you would like using the same gold?
