Sorry missed this earlier. Thats interesting, I've never known water hammer on a CH circuit. DHW yes but not on CH.
Cheers
didnt make myself plain. standard water hammer is usually in the cold feed system but the noise/banging can transfer to any adjacent pipe too. hence proper clipping of pipes is required.
many many homes do not have enough pipe clips. lazy plumbers.Get some gorm.0 -

ok, update,
I managed to get the whole valve out to bleed it, it now goes warm to the top. It is quieter but there is still a fair bit of tapping every now and again....so im now thinking this would be loose pipes? it does sound like pipes knocking in all honesty....Is this expensive? Job for a plumber?0 -
If its a tick tick tick tick noise that appears to get faster before it stops its due to pipework expanding as it gets hot which is inevitable (expansion I mean). The noise occurs because the pipes are probably binding on the joists. Clipping them won't stop the expansion and it the notch has been cut as an interference fit to the pipes there won't be room for a clip without modification anyway.
The answer is increase the size of the notch concerned and wrap the pipe.
