What are the pitfalls of 18185?

I'm thinking about joining 18185 and would like to know it there are any pitfalls I should be aware of?

I have a BT line and I cancelled the 'free' evening/weekends calls facility because it was £4.99 and I don't use my phone that much.

Any advice most welcome.

  • I use 18185 regularly on a Sunday morning to phone No1 daughter in Australia. It regularly takes me many attempts to get through to her mobile phone (which I get charged for). Is this a common occurance for other 18185 users?

I forgot to say I'll be only calling numbers in the UK.

Not many pitfalls. Remember customer service is non-existant. If you don't like it log on to the website and cancel. There's a connection charge of 4 or 5p on all calls including 0p/min calls so BT is still cheaper on the weekend for UK local/national calls.

For some who don't like paying for multiple bills for a similar service then that could be a pitfall too. No paper billing so you'll need to check your emails to see how much is going to be debited from your bank account and have the money available.

And the last one is if you make over 100 peak time calls then BT's anytime plan is cheaper at £4.99 per month....but there are other options.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

 BT Evening and Weekend call package does not cost £4.99 a month.

As far as I'm aware BT Evenings and Weekends package is £2.95 pm without a 12 month contract, NOT £4.99?

I think you must mean the Unlimited Anytime Plan.

However, don't forget you will still be on the Unlimited Weekend Plan - so weekend 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 calls of up to 60 minutes each will still be inclusive (no cost).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Going back to the original question re 18185 : -
just looked at my BT bill and my 18185 bill for the last 2 months
    18185 - 13 WEEKDAY CALLS -COST £0.77
    BT - 3 WEEKDAY CALLS - COST £1.31
Obviously much better using 18185; no downsides yet!!

I always use the just under ten minute weekday daytime call comparison.

    On BT, that will cost 9.25p 'call set-up fee' (from 1-1-10) + 10 x 5.25p = 61.75p

Using 18185, that same call would cost 5p. Yes, call quality may be questionable occasionally but saving 56.75p on just one call does tend to make that acceptable.

I would suggest paying by Direct Debit, if you choose Credit Card you cannot stop payments in the event of a dispute and 18185 are well known for the difficulty of getting hold of them.

With Direct Debit you always have the Direct Debit Guarantee to fall back on. If they don't get their money they will be in touch with you.
