How to stop cat ripping up the carpet

This is a recent thing, and I know the reason for it, he wants into the living room. They are being shut out of the living room right now because I want my Christmas tree intact for Christmas (having quite a few people over) and last year I ended up taking the tree down before Christmas as it was such a stress! (I also don't trust them unsupervised around the Christmas tree lights)

So I have a good feeling it's the youngest cat doing it, so the corner of my carpet near the door to the living room is a mess! It's all frayed and you can see to the floor (we were out last night and came home to that) I was like :eek: Combine my raggy carpets with the wallpaper he's managed to tear off, I must have a right nasty looking house now!

Q is - Is there anything I can put down (citrus fruit?) to stop him scratching at that piece of carpet (I'm not out much, and won't be in the next few days either but I do have a few app's and at night time they get shut out too) It's only to last until the 25th, with hopefully, no more damage to the carpet.

What about one of those floor mat scratching things? Are they easily moved? Cause I can see he would flip it out the way with his paw to get to what he wants!

we have a frayed carpet outside of our living room also,

i did try clove oil drops on floor, which did help.

i put alot of duct tape down,on carpet along door, this worked well for a while, and took alot of scraping from the cats.

    hth,
THANKS to everyone who posts competitions. you are all :A.

I have a cat like that. We had to give in and not shut any doors in the house. We put a dog guard around the tree and that seems to discourage the cats as well. Though they do sometimes sit there mesmerised

Would that work on a leather sofa? My friends kitten is very partial to the leather sofa

Only if you find a dog guard big enough to go round the sofa... ;)

I found the perfect solution to this.
Our daughter moved back in with us for a while and Tinker came wiht her.
She was ruining carpets, rugs and wallpaper, Till i spotted 'Scratch No More'
from Kleneze, it was miraculous, it stopped her dead in her tracks. Its a bit expensive at around a tenner and its wise to respray every week or so but it lasts a long time - and like i say it does exactly what it says on the can, so to speak.
Good luck all, and no, Im not a Kleneze rep, just passing it on.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Can you order that from their website? I used to have a Kleeenze lady and avon, and even betterware but they never last long!

I nipped out to Lidl, was gone 20mins max, put DD's sink stool (Plastic step thing for her to reach the sink) over that part of the door, came back and he'd knocked it out the way and scratched some more off....

He doesn't like it when he cant get his own way. I reckon I'll need to put the hoover over that area, he can't move that and he hates it! Until I manage to get something. Pest he is!

Yes, i would have thought so. It really is brilliant stuff.
Apparently it is citrus based and cats cant stand the stuff.

If he manages to shift the hoover, then a chest of drawers is the next step :rotfl::rotfl:
    Hope you get sorted soon.

Well I've just squeezed a lemon on the area and stuck him in front of it and he legged it (onto my Xmas tree GRRRR) I'm not having much luck lol.

I also have another missing bit of carpet outside my bedroom door as he too umbridge that I wouldn't let him in my room at night (sometimes I like to move my legs in bed, and then you have 5kg of cat molesting your body) but he stopped doing that after he reaised he wouldn't get in.

They have full run of the house otherwise, I just want my Xmas tree to not be on the floor every morning (I wouldn't mind if they JUST knocked the baubles off but they tip it and it lands on my tv and I've noticed a scratch on the screen oh oh....)

Chest ofdrawers....YEAH!! He'd no doubt find a way in and too the bottom though...

I'll check it out online, thanks!!

maybe you should lemon your xmas tree!!!

my grandad who was a vet used to recommend putting pepper where they weed to stop them doing it again cos they hate the smell, so that might help?
