Try Mrs L's forum for how-to's. It also has quite a lot of the sort of craft chat you were talking about but with more of an emphasis on country crafts

Hobbies = crafts/mending? (or is mending a part of household management?)
Gardening = gardening/grow your own? (or would gardening be classed as a 'hobby' or a part of household management, or DIY? )
Hobbies might end up being more a how to of crafts rather than a money saving board. Mending is difficult because there are other boards on here that would cover certain types of mending (eg things considered DIY etc.)
Gardening/grow your own has milage I think. I think it's all the things you say though so I don't know about that either.
But I like the idea of seperating this board into sub boards if no one felt that the community feel would change.
I even thought of a 'presents' board to cover Christmas as well as birthdays, weddings etc. But then maybe that would be better on the families board.
Ah well, just some musings. :think:May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
All really good points G.R
hmmmm, hmmmmmmmmmm
I think seperate gardening and crafts boards would work..most if the 'in my home posts' are about large scale d.i.y projects rather than, i.e how to shorten curtains, repair clothes etc.Membre Of Teh Misspleing Culb0 -
I agree with Starlite, we tend to focus more on the smaller ways of cheaply improving out homes that don't really fit elsewhere.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Thaks moggins, It's true those are big ideas, plus most of the posters on there go for 'bargains' not thinking of the long term durability/ ecological cost.
someone asked a question on that board about laminate flooring, and I (and others) said how it is short lived, and very expensive, and suggested cork/bamboo/ or just leaving the original stone and reconditioning it, and all the response was 'well we have decided to go for x from b&q' ..argh...
sory, not a personal attack, but I do think o.sers are more attuned to ideas of long lasting, and making it last rather than, cheap now, rip it of and throw it away and buy again laterMembre Of Teh Misspleing Culb0 -
I would love a craft/ clothes board I have recently stopped my sewing machine from turning into the biggest dustcollector in the house and am doing it because I like to bt also to save money (just put someblackout fabric as lining in my bedroom curtains saved £20 over buying ready made blackout lining!!!) I also make clothes for ds out of old clothes that me and dh would throw out. I am sure there are lots of people out there that could help me save in more ways and it would be nice to have a dedicated board to exchange ideas

Already there is a growing band of gardeners in OS and I believe that will only continue to grow (excuse the pun!)
Home Crafts are a natural development simply because it is a traditional moneysaving and old style method of managing.
I've been inspired by the gardening threads, I've been inspired by some of the craft topics that crop up tooAnd it's a lovely bonus to be able to chat along with others who share those interests.
I take the point that there are a lot of craft arenas on the 'net already, but then the same could be said to be true when it comes to cooking, slow cookers, cleaning, homemade cleaning recipes etc.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I think you're all onto something. The gardening stuff has inspired me enough to apply for an allotment. (Which is going to have to take a back step now I'm pregnant, but it's something I'll pick up again later for sure.) And I've got a friend who's going to teach me how to sew too. I do think there're convincing reasons to do something like this.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
