    Post 2 might be useful

If you do factory reset have you got your ISP username password and setting handy to input them in router assuming it works

OP ~ you still havnt done a basic RESET

At the back of the unit will be a very small reset button. With it powered on keep the button pressed for approx 30 seconds whilst the router resets itself

Then you should be able to log in using 'default' settings and take it from there

To not even try seems a tad daft to me

I have to reset the router at least twice a day, ...............

That's what I have to do, I do it regularly.

You could look if there are any firmware updates available for the router, after that a factory reset may help, but I doubt it - and you would have to set eveything up from scatch again.

I unplugged the router completely and left it alone for half an hour. I then managed to get logged in and got the firmware update done.

After the firmware updated, I did a factory reset.

So far I've been managing to log into it but it's only been on for around 10 minutes so time will tell. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's heat related in some way. The router doesn't feel any hotter to the touch than it ever did, but it seems that it plays up after it's been on for ages. I could be completely wrong about that though. Dropped connections have been a problem for a while too so we'll see if the update has helped or not.

In the meantime I'm going to research other models in case I need a replacement.

    Thanks everyone, help much appreciated.

My bad, I thought youd confused a reboot with a factory reset

Time for a new router methinks

Mmm....I think you're probably right. Bit of luck there might be something in the sales.

Just remember also to differentiate between a router and/or a router with built-in (adsl) modem. Some prefer the flexibility of the former; I think the latter often makes for a neater setup

....any recommendations? Prefer 'n', and able to handle gaming without lag issues and multiple wireless connections without dropping to a crawl (although I realise that has to do with bb itself also).
savemoney mentioned a Draytek vigor 2820n - I have the older 2800 (not 'n'), but these are really good routers, very stable, hardly ever need restarting, and hold the connection well - the downside is that they are expensive, I got mine from Ebay.
What about your ISP - sometimes they will send you one for free.

Freebies from isp's are usually the most basic models though, in fact the one they gave us originally didn't even have wireless capability.

I've seen a few good reviews for Draytek, I'm not familiar with them but I'll have a look. I don't mind shelling out for something that is good quality and will do the job well. Thanks.

^Indeed. No rule of thumb, but even now some ISPs are merely providing usb (and not Ethernet) modems.
  • It might be worth setting the troublesome machine to use Open DNS (google it).

If that works then setting the router to use Open DNS (if possible with the ISP and modem/router) might also be worth trying.
