BT - Six chargeable OR inclusive calls per quarter?

Hi

BT are trying to tell me (again!) that in order to get caller display for free I need to make six chargeable calls per quarter. I know it's actually six chargeable OR inclusive calls (thanks to you good people!) but please can someone tell me where I can find this in the terms and conditions so I can go back to them with a link?

Thanks

I think it's a question of semantics. I'm on the Unlimited Weekend Plan. I make my weekend UK 01/02/03 calls via BT. They are chargeable calls - it's just they are inclusive on my calls plan.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

What's the problem with making six chargeable calls? Done for an hour or less at weekends (or evening or daytime depending on your Plan) gets you caller display at no cost. Most people don't have the facility to make an inclusive call anyway.

It looks like you have to register for BT Privacy to qualify;-

"2. To receive Caller Display at no extra cost, you must register for BT Privacy and make at least six inclusive calls or six calls billed by BT per quarter (or two calls per month if billed monthly). Otherwise, you will be charged £2.50 per month. Subject to availability. Caller Display equipment and opt in required. Some numbers will not be shown, e.g. from payphones, withheld numbers. Allow 28 days for activation of the TPS service. Conditions apply."

    Similar explanation HERE.

Following the the 'Home phone security features tab' leads to 'BT Privacy at Home' and the conditions attached to using it.

So your chargeable calls are inclusive and your inclusive calls are chargeable. Which means BT's condition should be 'two chargeable or chargeable calls per month'? Is it possible BT would mangle the English language to this extent?

I think I'll just stick with my 'semantics' explanation in post #2!

I have enough trouble trying to educate my family about the correct use of apostrophe's.:p

BT CS have a woeful understanding of what a chargeable call is. Usually it involves an interpretation that calls must cost more than 0p. If littlemissmoney is on the same wrong wavelength as BT it's a bit more than semantics which needs reviewing. Resorting to using 'inclusive' hides but doesn't remove the misinformation.

All parents responsibilities have downsides. Yours is an important one because an apostrophes usefulness cant be underrated.

How does making six chargeable calls get you caller display at no cost?

I made (over) six calls at the weekend. They were all "inclusive" and free. But BT are saying these are not "chargeable" so they have charged me a £7.50 "low user charge". :( I have BT Privacy.

Three out of my last six monthly bills have been for £11.25. On one bill I made 45 calls, 43 to 01/02 numbers and 2 to 0845 numbers - all were inclusive calls so no charge.

On the other three bills the charge has been £11,51, £11.35 and £11.35.

I have BT Privacy so have Caller Display free.

Six separate weekend calls lasting less than an hour: each call is charged at 0p per minute (the advertised price) with no connection charge. The total charge (which goes on your bill) is £0.00. Zero cost to you.

Free of cost does not mean free of charge. If you avail yourself of a BOGOF offer at a supermarket I bet you are charged for both items and there are three charges on your till receipt.

Ok, I'll tentatively go along with calling your six calls 'inclusive' , provided you accept they are also chargeable. The word was actually added by BT to cover some non-chargeable calls.

You are not the first to report getting a 'low user charge' having made the six required calls through BT. I have no explanation for that apart from suggesting a fault with the billing system.

You are on a loser if you attempt to convince BT CS your weekend calls are chargeable. No technical or billing argument (keep in mind these calls are charged to you on your bill) will move them. It's quite disgraceful really but they've all had the training session.

In the past three months I have made one chargeable voice call and also enjoyed free caller display. If that were due to a glitch in the billing system (it's not) I'd be hoping they never found the cause.
  • Update: BT have just emailed me back and agreed to refund this as a "one-off goodwill guesture".

I'm still confused as to what the terms and conditions are though and whether I'm ok to just make six "free" calls with BT in future
