Recession finally hits the white hot property market of Aberdeen

Offshore jobs a gogo!

Hundreds of north-east oil and gas workers have been dealt a devastating blow just a week before Christmas – with the news their jobs are likely to be axed early in the new year.
About 250 Shell employees working in or out of Aberdeen received redundancy warnings yesterday, alongside more traditional seasonal cards and gifts from friends and relatives.
A union boss branded Shell’s move “horrendous”, while a spokeswoman for the oil and gas giant said there was never a good time for telling workers they could soon be out of a job.
Shell announced in October that several hundred jobs were to go in Scotland, most of them in Aberdeen.
St Fergus, near Peterhead, and Mossmorran in Fife, were also affected.
The jobs were axed as part of a major worldwide restructuring of the Anglo-Dutch company. About 5,000 jobs will be shed from its 50,000-strong global workforce.
Half the job cuts will be spread between the Netherlands, the US and the UK.
About 15,000 employees were warned they would have to reapply for 10,000 roles.
Nearly two-thirds of the Aberdeen redundancies were included in cuts revealed in April 2008.
Shell currently has more than 2,000 people working from the Granite City.
Although workers were fully aware of job losses looming in the North Sea, the timing of the redundancy warnings still came as a shock.
One Shell worker, who asked not to be named, said: “After 27 years with the company, I was this morning served with a notice of redundancy.
“I understand that a few hundred other Aberdeen staff have received the same.”
The employee added: “At least the uncertainty is over, but with just a week to go to Christmas it doesn’t say much for Shell’s principle of respect for employees.”
Jake Molloy, regional spokesman for the RMT union, said: “A significant number of workers have been notified their employment is likely to come to an end.
“This is not a nice Christmas present at all. It’s absolutely horrendous for people to be told just a week before Christmas their future is pretty bleak.”
Mr Molloy added: “Shell should have prolonged this process by a few weeks and at least let these workers have their festive holiday.
“There are a lot of long faces around in the industry just now.”
Shell’s spokeswoman said: “As previously indicated, we are going through a resourcing process to accord with a company-wide transition programme which began in May with the goal of making Shell a more efficient company.”
This was aimed at “faster decision-making, sharper implementation of strategy and more focus on costs and value,” she added.
On the timing of the redundancy warnings, the spokeswoman said: “Obviously there is never a good time for people to hear this sort of news.”
People thrown out of work as a result of the process would be helped by Shell in their pursuit of new jobs, said the spokeswoman.

Great news, property will double on this.

I knew some idiot would gloat about Aberdeen job losses, no surprise it's you.

This will have little to no impact on Aberdeen house prices however, so your enthusiasm for human misery is sadly misplaced.

There were a couple of thousand oil job losses last year, so a couple hundred more will make little difference to house prices, although no doubt it is traumatising to those going through it.

Most of these Shell staff are very highly paid, and will receive large severance packages. None of them will struggle to find work, as ex-Shell staff make a fortune contracting and consulting.

The outlook for Aberdeens oil industry is vastly better this year with Oil at $75 a barrel than it was a year ago when oil prices were hovering around $30 a barrel, and pretty much every company around was mothballing projects and laying off staff left right and centre.

But well done for showing your true colours, celebrating unemployment and rejoicing in people getting bad news at Christmas. :T

Shows exactly what you crashaholics are like.

It does seem odd to gloat over the misery of others at Christmas, even in a joking ironic tone.

I've learnt that this is socially acceptable.

The BBC keep running shows on property that do this. Why am I not allowed to?

Great quote, ably demonstrating just why normal people despise crashaholics so much. I'll leave it up here in case you have a brief moment of sanity later and try to edit it.;)

To be honest, this has been happening for a while now. I know quite a few guys that are struggling to find work offshore just now.

A good friend of mine had £120k contractor earnings in 08/09 earning £650pd 2wks on 2wks off, so far this year he has been away 4 times and his day rate has dropped to £525, works out around £30k so far this year.

The Aberdeen property market has remained stable probably due to the reluctance of locals to drop prices. Tight as badgers !!!!!! up here.

Doubt the news of 200 workers being made redundant will have an effect to be honest.

Not to worry, pretty soon unemployment benefit will be £25,000 per year. Just so that hard-working families can remain in their overpriced homes.

250 received warnings, doesn't say what the total cut will be though. Less than 250 presumably?

But you like to gloat over unaffordable housing for the masses & cheer every increasing HPI as if it's beneficial to the majority (which it isn't).

    So what are you like?.
