how typical... why din't you post the figures for 2009 where they were very different ie. the other way

Can you forward details of the poll for 2009? I could only find the one for 2008.

OK just found the poll for 2009.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2009/05_may/11/propertywatch.shtml

So 32% wanted prices to rise not the 70% Hamish keeps telling us. 30% want them to fall and the rest wanted them to stay the same.
  • The fact that people will inherit more expensive houses is irrelevant, it doesn't level the playing field.. I own my own house AND will inherit a more expensive house?! Also you may not inherit the house until you're 60 or 70?

    that's not 22% it's 32% :money:

so it's only 30% that wanted house prices to fall and 32% wanted them to go up...

doesn't that mean that more people want house prices to go up than go down?

it also means that more people want house prices to stay the same than go down.

we can then all agree that the minority of people want house prices to go down
Of those asked, 30% want them to decrease and 34% want them to stay the same. Only 32% of those interviewed say they want prices to go up.

Have I said any different? Hamish keeps telling us that 70% of the population are Homeowners and therefore HPI is good for them. They survey says otherwise and the majority do not want HPI. I have no doubt that the majority do not want prices to crash either.

i think the survey and Hamish's statement of 70% of property being owner occupied tell us two different pieces of the jigsaw and you can't compare. that's only my point of view though.

but it is a fact that it's only the minority of people that want house prices to go down in value

    Dear Hamish,

I do hope that this letter finds you in good health. My commiserations on this situation, and I hope it does not affect the regular column that you provide on here. I for one, (they may be others), find your output insightful and valuable, and of great use were one to contemplate a move away from civilised society to a more, how shall we say, rural style of life.

Anyhoo, as I think Burns himself once said, there's nae so fine as a haggis o'er the tyne yet warey be ye o'the RBS share pricey.

    Love from the Browns.

Hamish says that 70% of the populaiton are homeowners and want/benefit from HPI. The poll therefore should show that 60-70% of people want HPI. It does not and therefore I await Hamish's evidence to support the same comment he keeps making.

As far as I'm aware no one on this thread has suggested that the majority of the public want prices to fall so I cant see why you keep telling us only the minority want prices to fall. It not really relevant to the comments made by Hamish.
