Hows everyone getting on out there in the winter wonderland!!

Anyone else noticed that if you actually slow down, crawling up to junctions and lights if need be then theres virtually no chance of crashing?

Then you see white van man racing along at 35 towards the sharp bend with the ice on it.

And? You've obviously not watched Ice Road Truckers. 35 MPH would be considered sedate.

    Useless Snowdriving fact No.3.......
There is an optimum speed where the snow mostly blows over the windscreen instead of
landing on it (when driving slower than optimum)
hitting it (when driving faster than optimum)

This thread is from someone who wanted us to judge him if he drove after drinking 15 Jack Daniels to 'rescue' his girlfriend 15 miles away, who should've organised a cab in the first place ... ...

I'm not interested in his judgement of other drivers, in the snow, in the wet, in the dry or any other condition. What a waste of time.

  • Pah, it's the time of year every Scot and Northerner is pre-programmed to have a chuckle at folk struggling in a bit of snow and say 'call that snow!' :rotfl:

Nah, snow isn't too bad for driving in, ice can be different however! For snow, forget 1st gear, 2nd or 3rd can stop wheels spinning. Number of folk sitting in 1st revving the nuts off the engine with wheels spinning is mad.

Problems can be also occur with folk who are too cautious. We had 1/2 an inch to an inch on Thursday but roads were fine, free of snow and normal- traffic was moving at 55-60mph as I was going home but we had numerous problems from folk doing 30/35mph on 70 roads causing chaos. I understand the sentiment to slow down, but really wasn't necessary to go that slow and caused a lot of problems as traffic bottled up behind them.

Just drove 5 miles on a mixture of slush, snow, refrozen slush and hard pack. Nothing special, it happens most years around here, so I'm used to it. It's the old ethos of smooth. Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly, and you'll be fine. If you unbalance the car, it WILL bite your a$$.

  • I drove the five minute journey to work today, the back lane and side streets were covered in ice. I managed OK, no slips, skids or wheel spin. I just took everything nice and smooth. ;)

Just got back to Nottingham from the North-East - roads weren't as bad as you'd believe from the (mostly Southern) media coverage. People were actually being sensible about it all, had the speed and numpty manouvers knocked on the head and the gritters have been out in force apart from odd patches. Was generally slow but steady with traffic at 50ish+ all of the way (apart from the M1 roadworks which are always a joyous experience).

Lee, you need to try harder then :p
  • I even got wheel spin on my wheelbarrow.
