    What version of outlook?

Try outlook, help, detect and repair, if you have the option.

Does it appear in task manager, processes, when this happens?

If it isn't outlook express, it could be word crashing, try doing a detect and repair in word, and deleting normal.dot.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Hang on, I think we're maybe missing the obvious....

When outlook is open and there's the little icon in the system tray...right click on the icon and uncheck "hide when minimized"

    Hope it's this. :-)

alternatively you could try Mozilla Thunderbird.

does a better job than outlook in my opinion.

    get it here

You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.
  • Hi guys
thanks for all the help. No, it was not 'hide when minimised' - it did really close. Thunderbird is great if you don't want to use and share calendar, used advanced contact management and all the additional bits that a business user gets out of Outlook.
Anyway, I eventually reinstalled the whole thing from scratch and re-accessed my PST file, and bar losing a few settings, it's now behaving itself. I got bored of trying to fix as it was becoming increasingly obvious it was not going to be easy.
    Cheers
