    I've been Money Tipped!
Got stung by TNS once - negotiated an extra £10 fee via phone when I got a call asking me to do a job within 2 hours.

Payment time, no extra, even though I submitted on expenses sheet. Chased it up with the guy who offered it - no record of offering any more, therefore wouldn't pay it.

Have always asked the company to confirm extra fees with an email since then - no email, no results inputted.

  • If you get called by a MS company asking you to do an urgent job how much would you (% wise I know we mustn't talk £) try to up the fee? I never know if I'm under selling myself!

    TPAx

I think that most of us MSers are underselling ourselves! Who, apart from MSers and monkeys, would do some of the things we do, just for peanuts?

Seriously, though. There are a couple of companies I do urgent jobs for at std rate (they pay mileage anyway and have no limit). This is because they put enough work my way to make me feel valued, credit me with some intelligence and treat me with respect .... how's that for customer service from a MS company? Pity they aren't all like that!

With (most) of the other companies I try to be honest: if I'm going there anyway and can fit in a job without moving another, I tell them this, and sometimes just ask for a tad more (so they can show they appreciate me). That way, when I put myself out do do an urgent job for them, I can make a real killing! I think the important thing is to be able to justify any fee I ask for - as has already been said, it's not just the distance involved, it's also the time. Plus, if I have to reschedule other work (which I only like to do as a last resort), I have my reputation with other companies to consider (and therefore my future earning potential).

I sometimes end up saying that they can take it or leave it - if they can find someone who can do it cheaper, then they can go ahead and get them to do it. I point out that I have never let them down in the past. If they don't agree the fee, I end the call saying that if they can't get someone else, then I will still do it, but only at my rate and only if they can get back to me within, say, the next half hour. It works a fair bit of the time.

With some companies, I also negotiate for the extra jobs: I have a fair bit of work already scheduled for ..... APRIL!:rotfl:

Yahoo. Got a catologue job for today. Have only just read the notes and I'm delighted to see that it's buy and return only. No order in. Makes it easier.

Extra fees? Great. Had a few of these already and quite happy to do them. Lots of wee towns in my area that are quite isolated and won't usually get done for the normal fee. I'm quite happy spending all morning doing one of these jobs rather than running around doing 2/3/4 jobs for the same money.

I always start off saying the fee barely covers the petrol. See what they come back with. Maybe try for another 5 or 10 quid. Or a couple of pounds for parking. Then point out it will take x hours travelling and you wont be able to do any other jobs. Sometimes works.

Mind in my area, I will be going 20/30/40 miles to the jobs so I feel justified in asking for what I can get. Also if I agree x pounds for a job 20 miles away and I know there's another 15 miles further on then I'll offer to do it as well for another x pounds. And sometimes I fit in a normal job with another company that wasnt worth going to on it's own.
  • Has anyone else noticed that all of the March DIY jobs have vanished from TNS? Or is it just me? :(

The February dregs are still there.

Has anyone been paid by RE in the past couple of days?

I've been going though my statements and I'm not sure they've ever paid me! (I've suspected this for a while)

Place you bets now on how long it will take them to respond to me.

The 10 Feb payment will not show in my account for a few days yet. It should be there on the 15th.
