Sat Nav Advice

Good evening all :D

My Mother-in-Law has given me £160 and asked me if I will get a Sat Nav for her husband, while I'm in town. :o

All I have to go on is that he's 'mentioned in the past' how much he'd like a TomTom... now I know absolutely nothing AT ALL about Sat Navs, I've tried having a look at some online but to be honest, all the info and jargon goes waaayyy over my head lol!

Can anyone recommend or advise me, point me in the right direction, please? What is the 'newest' TomTom out there? Is this the best one to go for? Can I afford the newest one with £160?!!

I'd hugely appreciate any advice and guidance :o and, of course, I don't have to spend the full amount but will if necessary. I'll also be buying instore rather than online.

The tomtom classic at £129 is more than adequate.

I have an earlier tomtom one which is less capable but roughly equivalent and i use it every day at work. I've also used it in Europe and USA and its brilliant. Tomtom is the one. Dont buy any other IMHO.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I've just got the Tom Tom Classic XL for £100 on offer in Argos.

As a fairly recent user of a NavMan, I have to say... get the TomTom. Had one in the past, but the local scum decided they were more entitled to it than I was, the car insurance didn't cover it, and I couldn't afford a replacement :(

    I'd echo the TomTom's :)
We've got one of the One's here and it's a very nice bit of kit, especially for what is basically their "entry level" model.

I've tried a couple of other brands that were slightly cheaper (RAC was one, it was slow/couldn't hold a signal reliably etc, and the interface was poor with post codes being hit and miss*), but they weren't a patch on it.

I can't however say i've tried any of the equivalent brands in terms of price, but I've heard good things about Garmin (but as I say I haven't tried one).

One thing to remember with the TomTom, if you want you can buy a map subscription to automatically update the maps every 3 months, which if you're in an area with a lot of new building work/roads being done can be very handy (I took that sub up for a year whilst they were building a lot of new estates round here).

Always remember to take it out of the car when you leave as well as cleaning the windscreen. The marks left indicate to the scum there's one/been one there and will get in to have a 'looksee'.

Someone needs to tell hire companies this because I had a hire car for work for a couple of months and it was covered in sat nav sucker marks.

Nobody broke into it in the time I had it, mind.
  • I have a TomTom and it's very good and easy to use, I can't believe how much in price they have now dropped!

I recommend the TomTom Classic XL like Sailor Sam said from Argos, £99.99 for the larger screen model is a very good price. (It worth getting the XL model as it's easier to use due to the screen size)

    And always remember....

A lot of well documented problems of vehicles going the wrong way, are purely down to the owners not setting them up properly in the first place.

I'm an HGV driver of 44t vehicles, and because I set mine up properly when I first bought it, it very rarely takes me where I shouldn't be going. I also have free POI's installed from the TT site, which includes low bridges, weight limits, narrow streets etc, and 9.9 times out of 10, it works spot on.
