Unregistered sim

When you buy a pay as you go phone (o2) do you need to register the sim first. I cannot use the phone as it says "unregistered sim" and wont let me even ring the number to top up......
the free phone (0800 005 005 ) for o2 does not work any more
is there any other number i could try or has anyone else had this message ???

Its not a sim only contract. Its a pay as you go phone with a payg sim.....Do you need to top up first ? How do you do this ? Do they not have top up cards anymore as one did not come in the box with the Phone and sim card .....
we are all on contracts and dont use payg .

you have to top it up to activate it normally. Try dialling 1750 to switch on your voicemail then topping up. You can top up online if that helps? or 4444 from the handset to use your credit/debit card. You can still get the cards from the stores to do it, or if you go instore they can do it by phone number of print you off a voucher
