SORRY 10000 units, not 1000
just called EDF to see if electricity bill done yet as first proper one in this house... he asked me to confirm meter reading and said he needed to check as it looks like we have used 10000 units since September..
i am really hoping it is a mistake as we cant afford that!!
we have a 2 bed house, we probably do leave the lights on more than we need to (all energy saving bulbs though) we run a tumble drier a few times a week at the moment and dishwasher once a day (its a slimline one) we have dehumidifier on most of the time as we've had building work done (lots of water from plaster/concrete) plus tumble drier makes it v condensationy if we dont..
cooker is electric and i do cook almost every day. we have a small fishtank with filter running
i use the laptop a lot. cant think of anything else really...
heating and hot water are gas...
2 adults, 1 baby, i am in most of the day and tv is on constantly (lcd)
our meter is in a very difficult to read place so i am hoping i misread it when we started with EDF.. really hoping....
however i am worried we have somehow used this amount (would be about £1000)... is it possible... at all???

1000 units = 1000kWh costing around £1200

maybe it was 10000 units then.. it was the first number on the meter that is in question...
he said it would be 'over £1000' hence why he has put it on dispute.. just wondering it there is ANY way it is possibly true..0 -
Post your meter reading when you first moved in and what it is today, I'm sure somebody will be along to translate what it means! Somebody did that for me a while ago when I was unclear of my consumption. I'm now also taking fornightly readings and submitting them so I can be clear about it all.0

i dont have the meter reading when i moved in.. well its the one i gave them which was 8xxxx the latest on read by them was 9xxxx
they said if the first meter reading started with a 9 it would be more in line with normal usage but maybe we are some kind of energy saps...with abnormal usage...0 -

So read the meter today and then in one weeks time.

Is this a brand new house? We had a letter from EDF a bit ago warning us of an extra large bill, I rang them and gave them a meter reading and their reader had put too many digits in! I always write down meter readings when I take them - doesn't help with this, but might in the future.
The other thing that I was thinking is that if it is a new build and it comes out that this is the correct figure has there been a mess up and you are being charged for electricity for more than just your house or have you got a faulty meter? (Heard of this in a flat) We had a problem with our water meter and we were being charged for next doors water and them for ours.
I appreciate that it is hard to read, but I would try a few experiments, turn everything you can off - is the meter still moving around, how fast? Then put stuff back on as usual and read the meter at a set interval to give an idea of your usage.0 -
we have actually got one of those meter things..it hadnt been working but OH put new batteries in a couple of days ago and it looks like we use about 20-23kwh per day for the last few days.. so that works out at about 1800 units a quarter.. which is highish, but not ridiculous.. so hopefully its a mistake... fingers crossed!0

Do you have a meter like this? Very easy to get the first number incorrect
Reading a dial meter
If the pointer falls between two numbers, always read the lower number – in Fig A you would write down the number 4.
If the pointer is directly over a number always record it – in Fig B you would write down the number 5.
If the pointer on a dial falls between 9 and 0, reduce the reading already taken for the dial on the left by one – for example, if your original recorded 5, reduce this to 4.
Following these instructions, the correct meter reading for the dial in the diagram will be 44928.0
