Tiscali/Talk Talk. BT 1280 override.

I'm with Tiscali (Talk Talk) for broadband and calls and BT option 2 (free evening and weekend calls) for line rental. Everything has been fine for a couple of years using the BT 1280 override to get the free calls. I've just got my Tiscali bill for November to find that I've been charged by them for all the calls that I made using the 1280 override. Any other forum members experienced the same? Why do I suspect that this may have something to do with the Talk Talk takeover?

And another one bites the dust.

That's Sky, Talk Talk, AOL, Orange and now Tiscali.

    Next please.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

In the past TalkTalk customers who have requested it have had their CPS service restored so you could try asking Tiscali to do the same for you. As it stands you gain no benefit in terms of phone calls from the BT package you have.

To resolve it and get 1280 reinstated try the Talk Talk member forums, there are numerous 1280 requests on there.

The mods on there know what the issue is and know how to get it changed back, and they respond to your enquiries.

If you phone Talk Talk they act dumb and don't know what the 1280 number is for, never heard of 1280, can't think why you would want to route calls to BT, and tell you it's a BT fault.

    Or, in brief, they lie.

  • Thanks all.
  • Well I've swapped my calls back to BT due to this, and swapped internet provider as well, so their money making scheme has rather shot themselves in the foot with me and I suspect quite a few other customers.
  • I'm going to do the same. I sent them an email yesterday complaining, the automated reply says they'll answer within 2 days. I'm not hopeful. Problem then is getting a MAC code from them.

there is an option to get a mac code in the customer service menu on the tiscali website

    http://uk-tiscali.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/uk_tiscali.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

Just put the title of the request as mac code request, mine arrived in about a day and saved phoning.

Be aware that they don't then cancel your subscription when you use the code, I had to phone and complain that I was still being billed after the switchover. I have been promised a credit of the excess amount, we'll see if it materialises!
  • Stop my direct debit then?
  • That is a bit difficult because they bill you in arrears for your phone calls, and in advance for your broadband, so in theory my next bill should be in credit due to the unused part of the broadband for this month, so I will wait for the bill to be produced and complain again if the refund isn't forthcoming.
