Aren't they supposed to do credit checks etc? Surely something would've flagged up to them at that point? ie, details don't match, namely DOB.

@V.Lucky - good point... however is it not the responsibilty of the bank to ensure that I am eligible to apply for credit? is this not irresponsible of them?

should they of checked my age? - YES
could they of checked my age? - YES
did they check my age? - NO

So you take no responsibility for your own actions? They didn't force you to take out a card, you chose to lie.

I don't buy into this 'if you're young its OK to be stupid' assumption.

I know many young people who are pretty wise when it comes not only to money but also many other of lifes potential pitfalls.

On the other hand I have also witnessed a lot of older people who are an insult to the word stupid.

But we learn from our mistakes. That's normal.

A man who has not made a mistake, has made nothing.

Maybe the bank ignored the warnings. Wouldnt be the first time a bank has ignored something (such as the pitfalls of heavily investing in a subprime market in order to make a few quid)

    What details?

The only way to check a DOB is if there are other credit accounts already there. One of them has got to be first.

I mean, they must've known. But whoever was processing it either wasn't paying attention or chose to ignore it.

Irrespective of whether they were 'irresponsible' (and they were certainly no more irresponsible than you were), the fact is that you chose to spend the credit offered to you. What makes you think that it is ok to borrow money and not pay it back?
    Gone ... or have I?

Credit cards are (or were a few years ago anyway) processed separately from bank accounts by separate processing centres.

The information would have been taken from credit reference enquiries. DOB does not appear on those except for other credit accounts.

The OP has admitted he lied. An element of truth is assumed in what an applicant states on a credit application, and in most cases this assumption hold out - if every single fact had to be independantly verified then the granting of credit generally would grind to a halt.

Let's not start twisting who is at fault here.......the OP lied. End of.
