I don't think anyone was suggesting the spelling mistake was in anyway more important than the topic - if so people would only have addressed the spelling and not the topic at hand.

I would be interested to know the thought process behind your parents downsizing and then buying a bigger property than they intended.

Is this house bigger than their old one?

Remember to make sure they keep the oil topped up - can be a real nuisance if you forget that - especially in a cold winter.

Given the volitility of oil prices, I would suggest that you research wood burners if they are anywhere near the countryside.

As long as they are not in a smokeless zone they can get one for a few hundred and it would save them that much in the first year and heat one room very effectively. It can also provide some good background heat all day.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • 7 beds sounds alot but it isn't really. You can always use spare rooms as storage rooms and turn the heating down. Or wear plenty of layers. I've known older people who've sold houses because they thought they were too big for them on their own or not bought houses because they were supposedly too big and then bitterly regretted it. I've also known people who have retired to properties of that size and really enjoyed it.

Yes and make sure the oil tank is secure - there have been lots emptied by thieves lately because of the cost of fuel.
  • they're planning on a oil stove in one sitting room & the wood burner in another
They currently have a log fire so are used to that just its convenient also to have the oil one for days when they have been out & want a more instant heat or if mum is home alone.

:) off to see the house now

Like i said dad was just worrying he's settled now, we just have alot going on & what wiht christmas etc its got ontop of him

It will be interesting to hear your opinion once you have seen it.

  • hi everyone.

Well i went to the house last night.

Its lovely, it is big but in a spacious way for example the rooms are big.

Its not much bigger than their current house.

There are 4 bedrooms off the main landin so that isnt too many & then there are 2 small rooms which could be for storage or easily shut off.

Downstairs the rooms are of good proportion, but the kitchen extension is very big.

Mum is really happy & loves it, i think dad will get used to it, plus they will feel more comforatble when we are closeby.

I think dad is just daunted by the amount of work because both bathrooms need replacing etc.

    thanks again for advice.

We're planning now to decorate this weekend & replace the bathrooms before moving from the current house in January.
