corsa gear problems

I have a 52 plate corsa (couldn't tell you model just a basic one) and the gears are getting really difficult - I can get into 3rd and 4th without any difficulty, but frequently end up in them when trying to get into 1st or 2nd. Have had the car for about 18 months and reverse was always a bit awkward, I just put it down to being different from what I was used to driving. But just recently it has got really hard, and despite me trying really hard to make sure I push the gear stick over far enough to get 1st I am still getting 3rd, this is obviously getting a bit dangerous at junctions etc. I just wondered if anyone had any idea what might be causing this and if it is likely to be an expensive thing to sort out, before I approach a garage about it. Unfortunately we bought it a long way from home so it's not really an option to take it back to where we got it from.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

if the gears feel all sloppy and horrible, then its the gear linkage rods and connectors. not at all expensive, takes minutes to do.
if your not mechanically minded then take it to a garage mate.0 -
wow, what a quick reply!! they don't particularly feel sloppy, more really stiff, sometimes its absolutely fine and I have no problems whatsoever, but others it's a total nightmare! Will have to get it into a garage soon I think.0

well if your getting 3rd in stead of first, i would defiantly say linkage rods. least its a simple job. if you have a trusted garage or friendly mechanical guy it'll be cheap as chips.
without knowing the exact model details it will be something like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-CORSA-C-GEAR-SELECTOR-LINKAGE-KIT-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ280361301706QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4146d5f6ca
please note, this may not be the exact one, but the price will be roughly the same.0 -
It's possible it could be the clutch, the cable may need adjusting or failing that the clutch may be worn.0
