OP ~ bit of a shame about combofix as I feel it might be the only thing that id be able to sort this problem out with
Anyways, plenty of other things to try whilst they get it sorted ~
Download SUPERANTISPYWARE (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
UPDATE and PERFORM COMPLETE SCAN
(Then goto console and LOGS and post the log it created then untick it from STARTING UP WITH WINDOWS)
Download CCLEANER
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)
reboot
Download GLARY UTILITIES
http://www.glaryutilities.com/download/gusetup_slim.exe
Run the ONE CLICK scan
Goto MODULES / SYSTEM TOOLS / WINDOWS STANDARD TOOLS / then run SYSTEM FILE CHECKER
Download and run the FREE version of DR WEB
http://www.freedrweb.com/download+cureit/gr/
Turn your anti virus OFF
It will auto QUICK scan
After that set to scan the WHOLE computer and press the 'play' icon:idea:0 -
Hi RIK, I'm having some trouble with the laptop doing the things you have suggested - Avast is scanning all drives as we speak (Avast's suggestion) - I will get back to you later when I can provide the results you need.
In the meantime - many thanks for your help.

Hi Alienrik
I ended up having to do a restore - so nice and clean now
I've installed Avast AV but I was wondering if you have any suggestions for software to install, to save it happening again (whatever it was!)
Any advice would be great.
Have a great Christmas and New Year - happy travelling!0 -
Hang on, a restore or a format and reinstall of the operating system? If all youve done is restore back to an earlier point then its still on your computer:idea:0

Back to factory settings0

No worries
Im pretty sure I could have cured it without the factory reset, but at least its nice and clean now:idea:0
