my parents have recently obtained a new computer and then want to connect to the internet just so that they can contact friends and family via email etc...
they are going to be light users (a broadband connection would be to much) so is there a free dialup service where you just pay for the calls and nothing more and if so can anyone recommend one a decent one
on a bt line if that helps

Surefish do a no-subscription service (PAYG) - local call rates apply, so you pay that rate for as long as you are online. Also any profits made go towards Christian Aid charity.

Another alternative is the Tesco which has a PAYG service (1p per minute), and also a fixed price daytime access package (2am - 4pm) for 5.99 a month.

Waitrose (https://www.waitrose.com) also offer a PAYG dial up service. Profits are given to various charities. Usefully, they also have a good technical helpline which, if memory serves me correctly, is a freephone number.
They usually come out well in the Which? magazine ratings for ISPs.

Firefly offer a very cheap pre-pay dial up service - you pay £25 up front for 100 hours of internet access to use as and when you wish, and simply pay another £25 when you need to (if you want to, that is - there is no on-going committment). I have used it for a year or so now with no problems.
So even 3 hours a week would make the £25 last around 8 months!
