Freecycle Help Please

Options
Hi everyone,

This is my first post but I have been a lurker for a while.

I am signed up to freecycle in my area and have just posted details of a 3 piece suite I am giving away, I have already had a few people saying they are interested, am I just to choose who I want to give it too or are there any unspoken roles about this.

Thanks for reading

Generally our Freecycle group tend to ask random questions and then choose the best answer -
eg. Send best joke, what's my cats name?, think of a number - closest one to the one I'm thinking of gets the item...
It adds a bit of fun to the proceedings as also makes sure that the goods don't go to the same person each time. Beware - there are some unscrupulous people who collect things so that they can sell them on!
It's great to Freecycle though - enjoy!

When I did this I choose the first person who responded. She never came to pick it up so I contacted another person. After that I just posted on the site "Sorry I cant reply to you all but the item is now gone"

I think freecycle is a great place. Since I discoverd Moneysaving OS and got inspired, I have managed to get a bread maker, a slow cooker and tonight my husband is picking up a sewing mashine. I have saved a fortune and managed to give away some unwanted items as well :)

If you wait a day or two for replies, people often give reasons for why the item would be useful to them, which may help you make a decision.

Be careful about the arrangements you make for collection - especially with something like a three piece suite where you may want rid of it by a particular date.

I'm stunned at how often people ask for an item, and then just don't bother to turn up for it, reply to you, or alternatively just keep making and cancelling collection arrangements.

We have posters on ours who stipulate that they would rather it went to charity and things, maybe in future you can add that into your posting?

Well done though, I think it's a great thing to do.

I usually go on a first come first served basis, but have also had people not turn up to collect, so then just work my way down the list.
If it's a particularly heavy or bulky item it's worth mentioning in your post that they might need help to lift/transport it. I freecycled 32 3' x 2' flagstones last year & they were frighteningly heavy to lift!

i agree i wait and see if i get some sort of reason for wanting the item, i sadly have neighbours who get stuff for the sake of it and sell on ebay this has made me quite carefull about who i give any item i have advertised on there

When you have a few enquiries,it entirely up to you, I would always give to the one I thought needed it most, don't understnd tell a best joke, cats name etc. So yes choose who you want to give it to, and bless you for going freecycle. rather than selling.

    Its up to you!

I go with the one that gives me the best vibe about it - and if nobody stands out from the crowd, then I go with the first one to reply. :)

I 'got' my first thing from Freecycle today. My name was picked out of a hat :) I'm going to collect it tomorrow and I'm really pleased.

Is there a specific etiquette for collecting items apart from being punctual and appreciative? Should I take a gift (box of chocs) to say thank you?
Just run, run and keep on running!
