Is an adsl extension a good idea?

Apologies for picking brains again, but I do appreciate the great advice on here.
I'm having someone revamp my internet set-up and, although I'm not doing the work, like to have some knowledge as to what might work best.

The best speed (I'm told) is gained if the router is plugged directly into the master NTE5 socket via an ADSL NTE2000. However, it's been suggested that I have an NTE extension kit which will run some 15 metres to my router point. (Main socket in attic) I'm fine with this, but just wondered whether this distance might slow my speed down? Any thoughts welcomed!
Thanks, as ever!
James

I use a extension just a cheap wilkinsons one whilst I dont doubt it will effect speed a little I get around 15mb-16mb according to the router Draytek 2820n.

My stats: I am on 20mb LLU adsl2. Predicted speeds on BT web site gave my around 16mb before I went to adsl 2 on 1st Dec 09

My setup is main socket is in a boxed bedroom room (not my choice) A extension is connected to that and goes into hallway in a meter box (directly under boxed room) I fitted a extension to that into rear of house.

On each connection I put filters on (good quality one's) the router is at rear of house its new wireless 'n router and I have 4 pc's connected via wireless 'n'. I run a server from wireless n and get around 270Mbps which is in intregal garage approximately 20 feet away

I did pay and get higher db rated aerials on router and some network cards

You don't need to use an NTE2000 or any NTE extension kit, just ensure that only two wires are connected from terminals 2 & 5 on the master socket and on to all extensions. An extra 15 M of cable will make no noticeable difference if the correct cable is used and only the line pair is connected at the master.

Extensions wired to the rear of the faceplate in the way suggested by espresso (proper phone extension cable with twisted pair wires and no connection to terminals other than 2 or 5) should have no noticeable impact on sync speed.

Any plugin extension (cheap or expensive) carries a ringwire which will handily pick up any AM radio broadcasts, sparking motors, dodgy xmas lights, and any other RF noise there is around and dump it straight onto your ADSL signal through the ring capactitor in the master socket.

Plugin extensions are OK (but still imperfect for router use as they usually don't use twisted pair cable) if.....
    • Used for phones rather than the router and filtered at the master socket end.
    • Plugged into an extension wit no ring wire connection.
    • Plugged into a master fitted with a BT iPlate (see they do have some use)
  • Great, thanks. Appreciate the replies. Looks like you might save me some £££
