Your missing a trick here. Yes the 16 is discontinued and replaced by the 32.
If is is just stoarge as the difference then the 16 would be fine if you found one, however the 32 and 64 are v3 systems, have higher performance internals for things like games. Not just more space. The 8 is just the old 8v2 with 3.0 software on it, all 16s are the v2 but can be upgraded to the 3.0 software.
Tesco are doing 8GB with senhesier headphones, a real boost tbh

I'm fully aware the 32Gb and 64Gb are 3rd gen and the 8Gb is still 2nd Gen.

Any difference wasn't enough for me to jsutify spending the extra on a present for 10 year old though. Especially since in a year or two she'll probably want a 4th generation and then a 5th generation!

Hi all, thanks for all the replies.

I have just got an 8gb one from Argos, used £22.50 worth of nectar points to bring the price down a bit, and then got a free £15 i-tune voucher and a £10 argos voucher for spending over £100 pounds, so all in all very pleased.

    Thanks again

Glad you got one at a good deal:D

Im looking for one and trying to decide between 8gb or 32gb (do excuse me joining in your thread!)

Id be using it for music, photos and games/apps plus internet surfing for things like facebook.

Had been thinking 8gb but my old Nano is full and thats 8gb but then I dont listen to half the music on there!

So from reading some comments is the 32/64gb version faster than the 8gb one? Thought the new ones were all 3rd generation and the same speed? Would the 32gb one be quicker for the internet?

I did look in the Apple store today but didnt really understand all the talk:o

Would it be hard to pick up the internet at home? We have a router here and my netbook works fine but I dont know anything about linking things to the wifi!

This is a gift to me from my parents who have said they will get me the 32gb one if It's the best option can be a joint christmas and birthday gift. Really nice of them but we are just trying to work out the best option - dont want them spending the extra £70 if its not needed.

    Thanks.

I started out thinking I'd go for a 8gb touch, but having done some research I have realised that for the applications I wish to use it for, the 32gb is actually far better value (I'm a 50 something granny :rolleyes:)

Can you tell the difference between them?

Nothing to do with speed at all. haha All about space a 32 GB has 4X the capacity of the 8GB (8+8+8+8=32).

    Be fine

No, not needed in your case save the money and get the 16GB.

this is bad advice imo - even if you can find a 16gb touch (which is unlikely) it will be the 2nd generation, as there is no 16gb in the 3g models.

Streamed to my home hi-fi though a good quality DAC yes, on PC no. I would suspect it would be no on Ipod but have only put compressed files on that.

The 3rd gen models are faster. They have a faster CPU, GPU, and twice as much RAM.
