Try to compress the file. how much MB is your one file(average)

Why would I wan't to compress music files further? I'm a music lover. I'd prefer uncompressed files if possible, but 192kbps is a just about acceptable compromise for portability.

I suspect a typical 192kbps vbr Ogg track is about 3-5MB from memory.

  • Average let me see I say for a decent rip 320kbps (CD'ish quality) using MP3 around 5-6mb for one song longer if its a long track

320 kbps is probably overkill for most people. Obviously hardcore audiophiles will want the best quality posssible but I doubt the average person on the street would be able to tell the difference between 192kbps and 320kbps especially if you're using the rubbish earphones that come with the IPod.

You don't have to store all your music on the iPod at any one time. As long as it's stored on iTunes on a pc you can change as the fancy takes you.

If cost is an issue then I'd say the 8GB would be fine.

You make a good point there Debbie which I'd like to pick your brain on.

How easy is it to take music off, and others back on the iPod/iPhone. I've got well over 50GB of music, but obviously I can't listen to it all, so I'm considering the 16GB iPhone.

I've heard stories about syncing problems deleting music etc, etc...

Dead easy if you're just syncing to one computer. You just have a playlist (by default called something like "daDegg's iPod Touch") which your iPod syncs to. You move stuff in and out of that playlist as and when you like (just drag it). When you sync it will make the Ipod mirror that playlist.

The only times you'll get problems are when you have things on the iPod which are not on iTunes - that's when it deletes stuff. Or if you sync it with a different computer. Even then you can turn auto sync off to avoid the problems.

    It really is dead simple.

I like to have as much of my music on my DAP as possible. I tend to listen to a random mix when I'm out and about and it allows me to rediscover stuff I haven't listened to for ages. Similarly, it's frustrating if you are away from your PC, fancy listening to something in particular, but discover it's not on your DAP because you don't have room.

The only problems I've encountered are when you auto-synch an iPod with a pc. If you are happy to manually synch new music and/or playlists then you don't get any of the auto-delete issues. That's what I do with mine. That method also allows you to move music between different iPods and PCs.

iTunes will I think be set as a default to auto-synch. You can change it for an individual iPod from the summary tab by checking the "manually manage music and videos". You will then need to drag and drop any files you want from the pc to the ipod, and delete any you don't on your iPod. I manage all this easily via iTunes.

yeah 192 kbps is fine. most of them have 265kbps which has around 8 MB space.

I would suggest that if space is an issue for some, they do some experimenting to see what file size works best for them.

There's not really much point using 192 kbps if you can't tell the difference between it and 160 or 128 kbps.

(I'm not saying you can't tell the difference Fifer, I'm just making a general comment)

That's good advice Marty; it's exactly how I arrived at using 192kbps for portable music. I wouldn't use it at home though.
