Turned down???

Hi all,

Basically, I went into Phones4U to take out the iPhone and they were sorting out paying the final balance of my final 5mths of my Vodafone contract. It had all gone through but I said I wanted to sleep on it.

Unknown to me, I wasn't told by the Assistant that this would have a detrimental effect on my credit report because when I went back the following day, I was turned down by O2 and Orange for the iPhone 3GS. I was fuming but obviously nothing could be done about it!

Are there any options I have now that can convince Orange that I was accepted first time round as I don't really fancy going on PAYG? If not, does anybody own a Tesco iPhone as I can use a Staff Discount of somebodies for 10% off the PAYG handset? Also, would the Tesco handset accept an O2 simplicity sim card?

Thanks in advance

Every time you apply for credit it goes on your credit file, if you didn't go through with the contract I can't see why that would put a black mark on your file ?
No network will give you a contract without a check and they won't use an old one in case some thing's changed.

An O2 sim won't work in a Tesco iPhone unless you jailbreak it first, all iPhone are locked to the network their sold on.
  • Barker, i can remember you from a long ago previous post.

Were you able to get the 02 default removed from your credit file after the missed payments? I would think if you have a default for a mobile contract even if it is 'satisfied' is going to tempt any dealer that can easily sell the IPone 3G and 3GS to a customer which they feel might be more reliable at making payments.

  • Hi DarkConvict, you have an amazing memory lol. Yes the default was removed and changed to "2 Late Payments" now which I am much happier about considering I didn't owe the stupid company any money in the first place.

I realise how the "Default" would look on my credit file so made sure that it was gone before I applied for any future credit and was accepted by Orange on the Thursday. I knew O2 wouldn't accept because of past problems and prefered to be going to Orange because of their strong 3G signal.

That's what has annoyed me more than anything! Because they accepted me the Thursday but turned down on the Friday so I asked the Assistant in the shop and they said it must be because I didn't take out the contract the day before.

Is there nothing I can do now except wait for Vodafone iPhone (Upgrade Feb) or buy PAYG?

    Thanks again

I can't logically see why you were accepted the day before, but not now. I always take out contracts online but i believed you agreed to a contract in store before they actually did a credit check. Are you sure you were accepted yesterday, did they actually carry out a credit check? Might be an odd one but did you sign anything yesterday to give permission to carry out a check or to take out the contract.

  • No mate didn't sign anything, we just verbally went through all the options regarding tariffs, networks etc. When I said I wanted to go on Orange he said he would run the credit check on both networks to get the best deal. This came through as O2 turning me down which I expected but he said it had gone through with Orange.

The only reason I said I wanted to sleep on it was the £90 to pay off my existing Vodafone contract which I wasn't sure I could afford so close to Xmas.

That's when I went in the next day and ran the check again and it came back declined off both networks.

Has anyone got a Tesco iPhone PAYG? What is their 3g coverage like as they use O2's don't they?

Why cant you just wait till Feb? Its only a couple of months away. It seems silly wasting all this money just to get the phone a couple of months early.

you can appeal your applications by writing to them. Pick the network you want to join the most, get their appeals address off google and include your application number (you may need to go back to store to get it or phone up). They quite often overturn decisions as the original ones will be decided by computer in most cases (using your credit score and other rules).

Looks to me like the biggest problem is 4 credit searches in 2 days - applying for credit a few times in quick succession can have a detrimental affect on your score.

There is a better chance of O2 accepting you if you apply on their website. Mine was accepted this way and turned down everywhere else.

It gets to the end and then says "Referred to Credit And Risk" and a day or 2 later I got an email saying it had been sent to the warehouse for dispatch.

Also don't keep applying for Orange, they have a 3 month bar if you fail a credit check, so do vodafone.
