Im hoping i might get some help here, i recently bought a HP Pavillion dv5000 and already someone has broken the usb ports.
So i was going to get a pcmcia usb card, but when i have looked, its something odd.
Calls itself a ExpressCard/54 slot, and ive looked everywhere and cannot find one of these that have usb on it, in fact i cant find these at all.
Can any one point me in a direction to find them, as at the moment i cannot access my broadband or use my printer.
This is the spec of my laptop http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06b/21675-38187-38191-38191-38191-12319008-69074395.html?jumpid=oc_R1002_UKENC-001_HP%20Pavilion%20dv5031ea%20Notebook%20PC&lang=en&cc=uk
Maybe any other way to get usb ports working.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Something like this should do -- http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/48669
ExpressCard, CardBus, PC Card, PCMCIA card are different names for basically the same thing. ExpressCard is the most recent technology - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expresscard0 -
Try checking to see if the USB controller is enabled properly. Right click on the My Computer icon and select properties. Click on the hardware tab and then click the device manager button. In the next window towards the bottom of the list should be a universal serial bus controllers section, click the + sign to expand the list, are there any yellow symbols next to it to show there may be a problem?Useful is beautiful0

Thanks for the replys, but the ebuyer type is pcmcia card, which doesnt fit into mine, the type that do are the \34 and \54.

cambist wrote:There fine, what happened was the broadband cable was in, and the person using it stood up and had there foot on the cable,, which in turn has broken the connections.

The USB socket block probably just needs re-soldering to the circuit board. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Sorry, wasnt sure what you meant by broken i.e. physically broken or perhaps a driver issue maybe.Useful is beautiful0 -

Thought i would take the easy option, turns out not to be.
Why do they supply these things if you cant buy anything that fits.0 -
PC Express is the replacement for pcmcia and by all accounts is much faster. They arent however cross compatible and whilst I have read many articals singing the praises of PC Express to date I have only seen a couple of very expensive memory sticks that fit it.
I guess it is going the route of USB which was about for years (probably 5 years +) before it "caught on"All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

I could scream, want a pcmcia adaptor back, not one of these useless adaptors that are no good for nothing.0 -

I still think that it would be easier to repair the damaged USB socket. If you can't do it find an engineer who can!
