Short contract Broadband, no fixed line

Hi

I am probably moving into a rented flat in the next couple of months and don't know how long I will be there.

I need broadband, but don't need a fixed line, but would also need wireless as my kids will need access when they come over.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Richard

No phone line + short term contract = mobile BB

Need WiFi with that = 3G router

The main problem would be PAYG BB costs ~ £15 per GB + you may not have any coverage.

As kwikbreaks says, if you don't want to get a fixed line then the only choice is mobile broadband (with a 'dongle' from a mobile phone company). As it is mobile, you can take it with you when you move, so does it really matter if there is a long contract?

You can get an 18 month contract with '3' for £17 a month, with a 5GB usage limit (probably enough as long as you don't watch too many videos) - most importantly for your kids, it comes with what they call a "MiFi" router - mobile Wifi.

The same contract is available for £12 a month with just a normal dongle and no MiFi, but then you might need to buy a separate 3G router.
  • Thanks both, do I need a mobile phone contract with 3 as well?

Nope. If you are going for it, don't forget to check to see if you can go through any cashback websites.

Both of which need a BT line.
  • Thanks guys, like the idea of MiFi!!

I spend most of the day on my laptop as I use it for work, so probably 10 hours a day. 5gb on 3 says it is approx 50 hours of browsing, what does browsing actually mean in that case?

It means surfing the net. As opposed to downloading or streaming. Surfing still uses up your data allowance, but much less so.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • so if I'm logged into the web all day, would that count as browsing?

Being online does not use data. But accessing a web page or sending an email does use data, although not much.
