How to connect a usb modem to ethernet router?

I have just bought a 2nd hand router along with two wireless cards so my children can access the internet without wires trailing around the house.
It didn't come with a setup disk or anything but I have a rough idea how everything should work.
My main problem is my adsl modem (Speedtouch 330) uses a usb connection but the only connections available on my router are ethernet.
Do I have to buy a new modem or is there any way of connecting the adsl?

Which router is it? ADSL or Cable/DSL router (you need adsl for BT lines)
Don't you have a network card in either PC, looks like a modem socket, only bigger.. Ebuyer sell them for about a fiver if you don't have one. You normally plug the router into any network card to configure it in IE. Then ditch the modem, and replace it with the router.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
The router is a linksys wireless g adsl gateway with 4 ethernet ports on the back.
I assume that the modem has to connect to the router somehow, but there are no usb ports on the router.Stopped smoking Jan 2007 after 23 years!Cigarettes NOT smoked = 240,945Smoke free days = 11 Years :TCash saved so far = £125,45,110 -

Now I am confused!
I tried originally hooking the router to the computer via the ethernet cable which came supplied and also connected the phone line to the router.
From there I looked at the setup cd and it told me to put the http://192.168.1.1 address into the toolbar for the router to set itself up.
I did this but it came up with the connection box of the adsl modem and that stumped me, any advice gratefully received!Stopped smoking Jan 2007 after 23 years!Cigarettes NOT smoked = 240,945Smoke free days = 11 Years :TCash saved so far = £125,45,110 -
You should be able to download the instruction manual from their website.
Your router connects directly to the internet and acts as a perminant connection. You initially have to connect to the router via the IP address you have and then enter details such as your ADSL username and password etc... I have a netgear router so dont know the layout of the pages for your own.All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

I have a user guide on cd which I am browsing at the moment.
My main problem seems to be setting up the router via a webpage.
Whenever I type in the http://192 address, I get my connect box coming up for my usb modem, the guide says a box willl pop up asking for my passwords etc :
To access the web-based utility, launch Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, and enter the Gateway’s defaultIP address, 192.168.1.1, in the Address field. Then press Enter.
A password request page, shown in Figure 5-1 will appear. (non-Windows XP users will see a similar screen.)
Enteradmin (the default user name) in the User Name field, and enter admin (the default password) in the
Password field. Then click theOK button.
I don't get this, like I said, I get my original isp box coming up so I am not sure what to do next.

You were along the right lines..
In IE, try tools, internet options, connections, never dial a connection. Then go to the 192 address.
Start, run, cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
is also a good thing to try.
Loads of stuff on wireless here:

When you get it working, make sure you setup encryption and disable the SSID broadcast, not sure if the Linksys instructions take you down that road or not?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
its because your Internet explorer is trying to use your modem connection to get to 192.168.1.1
Go into tools , internet options then connections, then tab to the never dial up a connection,
when you then go to http://192.168.1.1 it will go to the router login page
sorry albertross didn't see that bit in your post above0 -

Yes, it does, I have the same router, once you get into the router settings pages, everything is very easy and simple to setup.
The SSID is in Wireless, Basic Wireless settings, here you can disable it.
Hope this helps0 -
I have set it up and my internet is working fine.
There are lots of options under the various tabs but do I need to change any for security?
I have disabled the ssid broadcast as you suggested and also changed the login and password details, do I need to do anything else?Stopped smoking Jan 2007 after 23 years!Cigarettes NOT smoked = 240,945Smoke free days = 11 Years :TCash saved so far = £125,45,110
