Tell the seller to drop you a line when he arrives in the UK with the car and all the paperwork and you will arrange to come and visit him and view the car.

Then don't wait for a response if you need a new car anytime soon.
• Seems to be quite common as a site search would have shown;

Here
Here

• Many really professional Escrow services aimed at car buyers have popped up recently, and nearly all (but not all) are fakes. Looking at their top-notch websites, with UK phone numbers and addresses, you would not know they are not genuine. They even sport fake HMRC and FSA registration numbers to look authentic. And they only exist to steal your money.

The good news is that from 1 November 2009, under the new Payment Services Regulations 2009, all UK escrow services need to be registered with the FSA. Fortunately from that date the FSA has provided an online register of all such genuine services at http://www.fsa.gov.uk/register/psdFirmSearchForm.do If a firm is not registered on the FSA website, then it is not allowed to trade, and should not be used. If a firm is registered, then it has been checked out (by the FSA and/or HMRC) and is genuine and should be safe.
I work for TrustedFriend.com, which is legitimate and registered and safe for escrow in the UK.
But shockingly nearly all escrow sites you will see are frauds, so always, always check the FSA website, as 99% of requests for escrow in our experience are fraudulent.

to put it simply and nicely,99.99% it is a scam,later emails would suggest using an 'escrow' service and he will say it is safe as he wont get the money till you get the car,anyways the escrow servioce he suggest will be bogus,

cars 'in' Italy seems a favourite for the scammers at the mo,
