Do you have a glass dining table?

Options
I have seen a lovely dining table - black and glass - would suit my kitchen perfectly. However, the one that is on display in the store had lots of scratches on, but the sales assistant says it is just because it has been on display for over six months and that customers just are not careful with their belongings, which is why it is so scratched.

Do you have a glass dining table, and has it aged well? If I do buy this table, it will be used on a daily basis by the whole family. I just don't want to spend £200 and in a few months it looks battered and scratched and old.

Hope someone can help before I part with my cash!

I bought one off Ebay for £25 last year as i wanted a table to seat 6. I freecycled this in the summer for two reasons, firstly the chairs were of poor quality and the legs were breaking off. Dad had tried to weld legs back on but to no avail. Secondly the scratches, they were on there when i bought it and admittedly looking at the table from a distance you could not see them but sitting/standing over the table it looked horrendous. It didnt look right using a table cloth so managed to get a wooden one from Homebase which i have felt a lot better about.

I've had one in a rented flat. It was a nightmare to keep clean, always looked smudged. I definitely wouldn't buy one again.

our table and computer table are both glass, both get scratched really easily and both show the dust and fingerprints after 5 seconds
  • Thank you all for your responses - I will have a look for a different table then...it looked so lovely in store, but up close the scratches looked terrible. I won't waste my money then :)

    Thanks again XXX

Same here. Ours never scratched but the cleaning of it was the bane of my life. For an occasionally used dining table, if you love it, go for it. But for an every day table, think carefully.

What a shame that the manufacturers haven't been able to come up with some kind of laminated finish that protects the surface.

I certainly wouldn't use a table cloth with a glass table, just imagine the problems that would be caused if it slipped .
  • Can I buck the trend here?! We have a glass dining table and I love it! It hasn't scratched (have had it two years), and is easier to keep clean than wood. I use mr muscle window cleaner and an e-cloth/window cloth to polish it and the only smears are from my toddler who hangs onto the edges to see what it on top...!

    I say go for it.

Ecover spray cleaner is with a microfibre cloth. Takes seconds and smells gorgeous (don't like the smell of window cleaner).

I also have a wrought iron & glass table & love it! The chairs have even stood up to the welly they get in this house with the kids :D Had it 4 years now and it isn't scratched. I clean it with a homemade mixture of vinegar, washing up liquid & water in an old spray bottle & it comes up lovely :T The legs of it all sort of meet in the middle underneath and they drive me mad to clean but not the table surface itself.
