Hi All

Any one had this?

I went crimbo shopping with my little girl on Sunday to a town about 60 miles away from me during the day we popped into Sainsburys to pick up a drink and some other bits, at the till I remembered I needed some cash for the parking machine so I asked the girl for £10 cashback. I entered my pin at the chip and pin machine which showed the amount including the cashback. She handed over the receipt and had to dash off to help someone on the self serve machines. Didnt think anything of it. It wasnt until I got down the bottom of the road that I realised she didnt give me the £10 cashback? I re-traced my steps and shops and dug out the receipt from the shop which had the phone number on it. The guy who answered at the shop said he would check and call back in 15 mins. When I called again, he had gone through the cctv and I was indeed correct, she hadnt handed over the c/b. I explained I could not simply just pop back in as I was on my way home at this point and would not be returning to the city for some weeks, could he just credit it back to my account? He said he didnt know and could I call the duty manager tomorrow to check? Duly called again and explained the situation to somebody else who said they would call the Area Manager to check what to do in this situation and call me straight back, and they never called me back, now the shop is closed!!!!! I am a bit annoyed about this, they have got my money and are in no rush to pay it back, any one else had this situ?

Aaaaaaarrrrgghhhhhhh:confused:

Sorry to hear of your plight.

I have forgotton my card and left it in the chip and pin machine but never forgot to get the cashback.

It seems like a 50/50 blame. You should have made sure you got the cashback and the SA should have made sure she gave it you.

Perhaps the store could send you the £10 back in the form of a gift voucher in the post. I don't know if they can actually refund back to the card without you present to input the PIN number.

Yeah as JAG said I don't think its possible for them to make a refund to a card without the card and PIN being entered.
  • I thought you only needed the pin for taking money out, not putting money in.

I don't think it is a case of them not being in a rush to give back the money, more a case of them not knowing how to do it.

Had the OP gone back to the shop they would have just handed over the money, but it's possible they have never had someone ask for the money to be put back on the card, so don't know how to do it.

Sorry but I have to ask this, what road were you on......the M1?

Why didn't you go back to the shop, it was only up the road?

    Under what circumstances?
  • Yeah I hate that, having to enter pin again to get a refund, always check that receipt carefully !!

As far as I know to refund money to a card you need either the card to be present or to have the card details to input to the machine to process it, I assume though that not all machines are the same as ours asks for a signature to confirm it not the pin to be entered if the customer is present and for the usual customer not present details for a refund over the phone etc.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

  • I still think it's a case of them not knowing what to do, rather than them not wanting to do it.

After all, people return goods for a refund all the time, but how often do they return the cash back for a refund. And that is what the system will think in this case, the customer didn't want the cash back so returned it for a refund.

I think the poor people are scratching their heads trying to work it out.

Do we give a refund, or do we just pay them a tenner because we forgot to give them it in cash?

I bet there is not a procedure for this situation, because nobody ever thought someone would need a refund on cash back.

Maybe you could ask them to send you a £10.00 sainburys voucher instead.

They would not be able to refund you card without you returning to the shop as already stated.
