Took out a new car insurance policy with company X in August. Company X asked me who my previous insurer was for my policy, i told them it was company Y and heard no more
Today i rang up company X to make a small enquiry, they sorted that out and then told me i had still not sent them the proof, i explained what happened and they said it must of been some mixup and i gave them my previous policy number so that they could check my previous NCD (10 years)
They email me back telling me it is only 6 (which its not, its 10), so i get on the blower to the old company and they also tell me its 6
Its not 6, its definitely 10, as ive never had an accident, etc
Looking at my old policy document from company Y it says i have a maximum no claims discount
Is this earnt when you get to 6 years?
The new company want more money if I cant proove the 10!
HELP!

Post Office? Is that the new insurer?
I had similar issue a couple of years ago. Current insurer only said 6 years as that was the max they offer, new insurer wanted proof of 9 years.
I cancelled and went elsewhere

No its not, but its a total swizz if the max they will report is 6!0 -
Yeah, I know.
The Post Office car insurance is provided by BISL Limited, who also trade, or provide administration, under a host of other names e.g. Budget Insurance, Dial Direct, Bennetts, comparethemarket.com, Quotemart, yesinsurance, myquote ...etc.
HSBC & Barclays also use them

Yeah, it was MoreThan that I left too.

Only because PO offered a cheaper price with a £50 off voucher I had.
By the time I tried to go back to MoreThan, they'd increased the asking premium, new calendar month or some such nonsense

Presumably your current insurers will know how much no claims you had when you started with them, they should also confirm that you've not made a claim in the entire time you've been with them, hence X + Y = number of claim free years....
I get round this by having a fifteen years worth of renewal statements listing my no claims going up and then stopping at 9 for the last five years or so....0 -

thats the exact problem, they are randomly asking me for the proof, 6 months into the policy0 -
When I was working for a well known car insurance company (this was a couple of years back), the maximum no claims discount you could get was at 5 or 6 years I believe. For this instance, let's say 6. Even if you actually had 10 years NC, if you had an accident it would drop down to 4 because they wouldn't take into account how many years you had, you would just be given the maximum.
I remember you could actually put in up to 9 years but you only got the discount up to 6 so you wont be missing out on any discount there.
I always use to think that it was a little unfair that if you had, say, no accidents or claims for 20 years you would drop down to 4 after just one but alas, that was the case.
I'm pretty sure that is still how it works.
