NCD advice

Took out a new car insurance policy with company X in August. Company X asked me who my previous insurer was for my policy, i told them it was company Y and heard no more

Today i rang up company X to make a small enquiry, they sorted that out and then told me i had still not sent them the proof, i explained what happened and they said it must of been some mixup and i gave them my previous policy number so that they could check my previous NCD (10 years)

They email me back telling me it is only 6 (which its not, its 10), so i get on the blower to the old company and they also tell me its 6

Its not 6, its definitely 10, as ive never had an accident, etc
Looking at my old policy document from company Y it says i have a maximum no claims discount

Is this earnt when you get to 6 years?

The new company want more money if I cant proove the 10!

HELP!

Post Office? Is that the new insurer?

I had similar issue a couple of years ago. Current insurer only said 6 years as that was the max they offer, new insurer wanted proof of 9 years.

I cancelled and went elsewhere :)

    Yeah, I know.

The Post Office car insurance is provided by BISL Limited, who also trade, or provide administration, under a host of other names e.g. Budget Insurance, Dial Direct, Bennetts, comparethemarket.com, Quotemart, yesinsurance, myquote ...etc.
HSBC & Barclays also use them

A nightmare trying to avoid them

Yeah, it was MoreThan that I left too. :(

Only because PO offered a cheaper price with a £50 off voucher I had.
By the time I tried to go back to MoreThan, they'd increased the asking premium, new calendar month or some such nonsense :(

  • Either get the proof, pay the extra or take out a new policy before they void the insurance leaving you high and dry.

thats it, im asking how do i get the proof, if i could do that i wouldnt be asking here!
  • Previous insurers?

    Before the last knobs.

yeah thats my next plan, but trying to remember who i was with could be tricky!

Presumably your current insurers will know how much no claims you had when you started with them, they should also confirm that you've not made a claim in the entire time you've been with them, hence X + Y = number of claim free years....

I get round this by having a fifteen years worth of renewal statements listing my no claims going up and then stopping at 9 for the last five years or so....

thats the exact problem, they are randomly asking me for the proof, 6 months into the policy

When I was working for a well known car insurance company (this was a couple of years back), the maximum no claims discount you could get was at 5 or 6 years I believe. For this instance, let's say 6. Even if you actually had 10 years NC, if you had an accident it would drop down to 4 because they wouldn't take into account how many years you had, you would just be given the maximum.
I remember you could actually put in up to 9 years but you only got the discount up to 6 so you wont be missing out on any discount there.
I always use to think that it was a little unfair that if you had, say, no accidents or claims for 20 years you would drop down to 4 after just one but alas, that was the case.
I'm pretty sure that is still how it works.
    Crap I know.
